Grambling State volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas cuts entire 19-player roster

Can't say I've heard of this kind of instant wholesale clearance by a new coach in an NCAA sport before. All I can say is wow
Also, the attitude of the AD administrators at Grambling is just... ugh
"Just as the transfer portal empowers student-athletes," Scott said in a statement, "our coaches are also empowered to make the decisions they deem necessary to advance their programs."
"I hate to say out with the old, but in with the new a little bit," Howard said...."We have a goal as an institution and a vision as well to win, and that's first and foremost."

Wow. I can't recall anything like this happening in college sports, an entire team having their scholarships yanked to make room for incoming players. Lucas will have the attention of the new players coming into the program, that is for certain.

It will be interesting to see if coaches in other sports start going this route. Maybe not an entire team but several players if the coach thinks they underperformed??

I don't object to Grambling AD attitude/comments either.

Certainly hope the coach knows who is transferring in to the school.

How about at the high school level where three young ladies were in the school play and they scheduled the final dress rehearsal the same time as volleyball tryouts. The coach said if you don’t come you don’t make it. Parents went to the AD and explained the situation and the coach was told to have an additional tryout day which he did and then proceeded to cut the girls anyway. The girls Who we’re cut we’re obviously better than a few of the girls who made the team but the coach was making a statement about how he would run his program and no one would tell him otherwise. Incredibly unfair to the young ladies that wanted to play volleyball for the season and would’ve helped the team. Other than the try out there would have been no conflict in scheduling and they still cut these young ladies that tried out. And the athletic Director did nothing about it. A so-called educator who thinks way too much of himself at the expense of three kids who wanted to play volleyball and had nothing to do with the scheduling issue. Sad.

I could understand if there were behavioral or academic issues, but if it's about their physical abilities that should be on the last coach..........these kids came to that school to get an education and then play a sport.........I hope that they can get some kind of financial aid or scholarship money to continue their studies at the school if they want to give up the sport.......

The AD has been quoted saying that they think 13 or 14 are coming on board, per the Fox article I saw via Twitter.

@cordarone , I don't think the portion of the quote you included provides enough context as to why this seems tone deaf (or to me it does at least). Per the article he's quoted as saying "I hate to say out with the old, but in with the new a little bit," Howard said. "Obviously we don't want them to be cut or lose their scholarships or whatever that might be or whatever that might look like. At the end of the day, Coach Lucas has a goal, has a vision. We have a goal as an institution and a vision as well to win, and that's first and foremost."

The portion I put in bold text had me cringing. If you don't want it to happen, then what are you doing to help these athletes?????

In job just 2 months and she knows every player is not qualified?

Lucas, a 2007 Grambling alum, became the team’s head coach in February
. She had previously told all 19 players on the team that she would be making some roster changes, according to GSU’s sports communication director Brian Howard.

I will be shocked if she gets away with releasing all of her players.

Too large of an ego for a coach. Find another job.

There's a contradiction of facts between statements made by the communication director and the athletic director about how many players have been cut and how many transfers have been signed.
It may be that only 4-5 players were cut and 4-5 new transfer players were signed.

This news story has a statement by the AD.

This article below includes this statement by the AD:

“I want to provide some fact. I’ve been told, and again I’ve only spoken to two student athletes, one perspective and one current, that Coach Lucas is bringing an entire team is inaccurate. My belief is it is four or five young ladies. I think the tone and tenor is that she cut the entire team, in fact she intended to keep four or five, ”Scott said.

Is Grambling even close to a competitive volleyball program?

High standards and expectations always keeps the slackers and deadwood away and attracts those on need of a challenge and the confidence to succeed.

In business read about "Chainsaw Al" Dunlap. He was known at the peak of his career as a turnaround management specialist via mass layoffs.

Some of these responses make me wonder if people even read the article. This was not a decision made by the coach without having practices. It would appear to me that the players did not buy into her system or did not produce in the practices. The coach was brought in to produce a winning team. The decisions that were made (and may in fact only affect up to 5 players) were told to each player individually after a meeting with the coach. To just criticize a coach without context or full knowledge is just plain wrong in my view. The AD apparently has her back and likely has more info than we do. Some of the statements seem a bit harsh however. The group might have felt entitled or were used to not giving their all in practice. Given what we know there is no context.

I use Google search and read all 4 articles. All said the coach cuts the whole team players. Now suddenly the AD said no, not all. Who I should believe. If whatever the AD said is correct then those 4 mediums should correct their news?
