Thank goodness for a clutch hit from Melley. I still question some of the decisions this team makes. 1st and 2nd no outs and one guy getting on by a hit by pitch, then Mazzilli has a 3 and 0 count and he swings fouling it off then pops up on 3 and 1. Why not take a few pitches since the pitcher appears to be wild. Instead we almost let him off the hook. Now while typing this Conner David with a 3 run homer. 5 - 0 UConn

I don't question giving a guy with something ridiculous like a 1.200 OPS a green light on 3-0. Gets it in the pitcher's head that he can't just mail it in on 3-0. Having said that, I see why some might have a problem with it.

7-0 lead and what do they teach growing up with a big lead, throw strikes. Our pitchers have 7 walks in 2.1 innings and now it is 7-3. Come on guys!

Twice the opposition has had the bases loaded with no outs and they only have 3 runs. Could be a heck of a lot worse.

Any ideas why Penders is starting Colletti in these mid week games and not Butler or Tabakman but yet using them in relief?

I think Penders doesn't mind having a well regarded freshman start midweek games since most of them are against the weaker teams that normally populate the midweek schedule, College of Charleston notwithstanding. It's a way of getting Colletti's feet wet, so to speak. Meanwhile, Butler and Tabakman are known quantities to Penders that he trusts, and he is using them in this way to add a lot more depth to the bullpen.

I suspect that the game last week against Central is going to be a harbinger of what we are going to see quite a bit of in the midweek games. Colletti starting, with any number of unproven pitchers coming in (hopefully with big leads) to get their feet wet trying to gain Penders trust.

Recap: Five early runs ignite Huskies to 9-4 win at CofC. David homer and Siena goes 4-for-5...

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/031913aaa.html

Game Notes:
- LJ Mazzilli went 2-for-5; his 10th multi-hit game, to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
- Bobby Melley has reached base in 13 consecutive games.
- Vinny Siena picked up his ninth multi-hit game and his fourth with three or more.
- UConn now leads the all-time series against CofC, 2-1, having met in each of the last three seasons.
- The UConn infield turned a season-high three double plays.
- Three hits allowed by the UConn pitchers is the lowest of the season…previous low was six; four times.

Adding to what dbmill said above, Colletti is likely going to be a big part of the weekend rotation in the future so ideally they will get him a good amount of starts in the midweek OOC schedule this year.
