That's when they should've changed the name.Didn’t become the State University of NJ until like the 1950s. So renaming it seems a little out of place I’d say.

I think Dave and both the B12 and ACC Commishes are in regular communication. The ACC would be the best solution for us I think. You have to think the reason UConn football has had ~3 ACC teams on its schedule in recent years is that the ACC is helping UConn build up its program, and establish rivalries with ACC schools. If the ACC wasn't talking to UConn behind the scenes in preparation for a possible union, you wouldn't see that schedule.
I don't know if it was written into their charter, never saw that, but their AD at the time Syracuse and Pitt were invited to the ACC, Gene DeFilipo, later admitted that BC told the ACC that they couldn't take UConn because BC wanted to be the only ACC team in New England. Every time I'm remided that BC is in the ACC it makes me laugh that the ACC actually thought they were getting something with BC.Maybe I made this up but I could have sworn that I read when BC left the Big East for the ACC that BC had it written into their charter about them being the only school in New England or something like that. In fact I'm pretty sure when Syracuse and Pitt joined that BC blocked UConn from joining. I just don't see that happening unfortunately.
I don't think associating anything more closely with New Jersey is a good thing for its brand.Rutgers was one of the oldest schools in the country. It was originally Queens College (Columbia was Kings). Renamed in the early 1800s for a guy who donated big money (Rutgers was the first football program and maybe the first naming rights??😉). It was a private school for most of its existence. Didn’t become the State University of NJ until like the 1950s. So renaming it seems a little out of place I’d say.
Great state. Beautiful coastline, horse farms, forests, best bagels in the country, best Italian food I've had in the country...I don't think associating anything more closely with New Jersey is a good thing for its brand.
I think the A.C.C. fashioned themselves as the Southern Atlantic Coast Ivy League, and at that time B.C. better fit that narrative. This and their continuity with Miami and Notre Dame. Of course V-Tech and Pitt are far from that mold, but their Football programs were very high level during that time.I don't know if it was written into their charter, never saw that, but their AD at the time Syracuse and Pitt were invited to the ACC, Gene DeFilipo, later admitted that BC told the ACC that they couldn't take UConn because BC wanted to be the only ACC team in New England. It would not be a straight up merger. A lot of the midwest and west would be out. It only makes sense for travel budgets to keep things fairly Atlantic Coast so goodbye Creighton, Marquette, California, etc.If you merged the conferences you’d have 29 teams. 19 basketball/football 10 basketball/no football Have 2/3 divisions for basketball, 2 for football. Something like that. Not a fan of it though
Who’s brand, New Jersey or Rutgers?? !I don't think associating anything more closely with New Jersey is a good thing for its brand.
I was thinking just the opposite. Much easier trip from San Francisco to Milwaukee than to Miami or Raleigh-Durham. And while I doubt Stanford or Cal really like being in the ACC they prefer it to living among the plebians in the new PAC 12.It would not be a straight up merger. A lot of the midwest and west would be out. It only makes sense for travel budgets to keep things fairly Atlantic Coast so goodbye Creighton, Marquette, California, etc.
I think BC has far less influence these days. Looking at maybe going 0-ACC in football and basketball yet again has that effect on people.I don't know if it was written into their charter, never saw that, but their AD at the time Syracuse and Pitt were invited to the ACC, Gene DeFilipo, later admitted that BC told the ACC that they couldn't take UConn because BC wanted to be the only ACC team in New England. With the big money behind St. John’s that’s not an issuePer Amore, quoting Pitino this idea has no legs. If I’m St John’s I’m scared to death of this. It’s one thing to have to play UCONN, Marquette and Creighton. But add Duke, UNC, and a few others and suddenly you are looking at too many mountains to climb and you are back among the middle of the pack.
It will be as soon as Pitino leaves. With the big money behind St. John’s that’s not an issue
Yeah, we all watched The Sopranos. Just don't get lost in the Pine BarrensGreat state. Beautiful coastline, horse farms, forests, best bagels in the country, best Italian food I've had in the country...
Goodbye PC, SJu, Hall, Xavier, Butler and Depaul too. UConn plus Nova and Gtown the 3 biggest brands/markets in the northeast, that’s it.It would not be a straight up merger. A lot of the midwest and west would be out. It only makes sense for travel budgets to keep things fairly Atlantic Coast so goodbye Creighton, Marquette, California, etc.
Goodbye PC, Hall, Xavier, Butler and Depaul too. They’re all dead weight. UConn plus the 3 biggest brands/markets in the northeast inSJU Nova Gtown, that’s it. Maybe no SJU either since we bring storrs south.
I think UConn plus nobody. St John’s level teams are dime a dozen. Good not great. Local following when they win. Zero national following.Goodbye PC, SJu, Hall, Xavier, Butler and Depaul too. UConn plus Nova and Gtown the 3 biggest brands/markets in the northeast, that’s it.
There are some great points in this thread. I’ll make one, we had one of the best ACC matchups all year in footballALL sports: Can we please stop posing? Call me a boomer, dinosaur, old man (I am all of the above), but Vince Lombardi was right,
“Act like you’ve been there before”.
this year. It may not be in the league, but we might as well be lol.Sort of. The old Queen's College had financial difficulties and was open and shut down a few times. I believe that there's at least a few years between the last time it closed and when it was re-purchased and became Rutgers College. It's actually more accurately remembered as a purchase by Rutgers College of the defunct Queen's College assets.Rutgers was one of the oldest schools in the country. It was originally Queens College (Columbia was Kings). Renamed in the early 1800s for a guy who donated big money (Rutgers was the first football program and maybe the first naming rights??😉). By that thought process, UMass should be rebranding to a name that doesn't include Massachusetts. 😁I don't think associating anything more closely with New Jersey is a good thing for its brand.
When Coach K talked about it talked about it, he specifically mentioned acquiring the Midwestern schools. Not that he has any specific insight or insider information. It would not be a straight up merger. A lot of the midwest and west would be out. It only makes sense for travel budgets to keep things fairly Atlantic Coast so goodbye Creighton, Marquette, California, etc.
Eh. Jersey people lean heavily on it. Just ask Danny.I don't think associating anything more closely with New Jersey is a good thing for its brand.
They should rename the student section the "Mass Hole"By that thought process, UMass should be rebranding to a name that doesn't include Massachusetts. 😁
