Rutgers was one of the oldest schools in the country. It was originally Queens College (Columbia was Kings). Renamed in the early 1800s for a guy who donated big money (Rutgers was the first football program and maybe the first naming rights??😉). It was a private school for most of its existence. Didn’t become the State University of NJ until like the 1950s. So renaming it seems a little out of place I’d say.

I don't think associating anything more closely with New Jersey is a good thing for its brand.

I don't know if it was written into their charter, never saw that, but their AD at the time Syracuse and Pitt were invited to the ACC, Gene DeFilipo, later admitted that BC told the ACC that they couldn't take UConn because BC wanted to be the only ACC team in New England. Every time I'm remided that BC is in the ACC it makes me laugh that the ACC actually thought they were getting something with BC.

I think the A.C.C. fashioned themselves as the Southern Atlantic Coast Ivy League, and at that time B.C. better fit that narrative. This and their continuity with Miami and Notre Dame. Of course V-Tech and Pitt are far from that mold, but their Football programs were very high level during that time.

If you merged the conferences you’d have 29 teams. 19 basketball/football 10 basketball/no football Have 2/3 divisions for basketball, 2 for football. Something like that. Not a fan of it though

I was thinking just the opposite. Much easier trip from San Francisco to Milwaukee than to Miami or Raleigh-Durham. And while I doubt Stanford or Cal really like being in the ACC they prefer it to living among the plebians in the new PAC 12.

I think BC has far less influence these days. Looking at maybe going 0-ACC in football and basketball yet again has that effect on people.

There are some great points in this thread. I’ll make one, we had one of the best ACC matchups all year in football this year. It may not be in the league, but we might as well be lol.

And if you’re an ACC school, you’ve gotta look at that and say wow put a quality program in UConn Stadium and look what happens?

It’s one of these situations just add water and watch it grow! It would be definitely good for them.

All these northeastern schools close by playing each other rivalries the whole bit.

No, this is taking some high profile negative press with refereeing and certainly their Marquet schools struggling.

I no longer see as an aspirational conference. If they want us yeah OK let’s make it happen but it’s not the end all for our program anymore..

Sort of. The old Queen's College had financial difficulties and was open and shut down a few times. I believe that there's at least a few years between the last time it closed and when it was re-purchased and became Rutgers College. It's actually more accurately remembered as a purchase by Rutgers College of the defunct Queen's College assets.

In any event, there was a push in the mid to late 80s, if I recall correctly, to rebrand the university as "Rutgers – the state University of New Jersey". I remember there being changes to the letterhead, and possibly some merch, but as so many things in involving Rutgers, it was half assed and eventually faded away.

When Coach K talked about it talked about it, he specifically mentioned acquiring the Midwestern schools. Not that he has any specific insight or insider information.

BC a midsized l Jesuit School was never a fit for the ACC. In retrospect. Compared to Uconn the flagship University of a state of over 3,000,000
I thing the Big 12 made a bigger mistake in not taking UConn
The problem with that conference is markets . Getting them into the Northeast could increase eyeballs which means $$$$
