coaching changes

Too bad from my point of view. I like Kieger. Did a nice job at Marquette.

As a Rutgers alum - I don't like Penn State. Not one iota, although, I admit I didn't wish CW any ill will during her time there, I certainly wanted her to be a success - just not too much of one.

I fear Ms. Kieger could elevate Penn State, a school that certainly takes its athletics seriously, far higher than I would wish. Oh, well.

She seemed really enamored with what Geno did taking a mid-major and making them into a contender, and I thought she was going to try and do the same there.

Here's a 247 (Go Jackets) article that lists some folks they think would be good coaching possibilities for GT, including Felicie Leggett-Jack. Others include Princeton's Courtney Banghart, Kellie Harper (if that gig in Knoxville does not work out), Tina Langley of Rice, Megan Duffy of Miami of Ohio and Niele Ivey, the associate head coach at Notre Dame. Have no idea how concrete this writer's contacts are, but thought it would be interesting to float these names.

Big whiff from Felicia Legate Jack who prominently put herself out there and then missed on the 3 top jobs. Tough to go back after that and convince players you're all in.

Marquette seeming only job on the board that would be an upgrade. Unless something happens at UNC or Rutgers ... may be no more top jobs coming open.

Nell Fortner...? Has it ever worked out when a coach returns to the game after a long absence? I can't think of any positive examples. Last coached during the '11-'12 season according to wiki. Her overall coaching record is about as meh as Kelly Harper. Take away one 30-4 season at Auburn and it's really meh.

But to people who dont follow wcbb, it *sounds* good. She'll be there for a few years, and then they'll move on to someone else. Basically a school that doesn't care. They have made the sweet 16 once, ever. And the 2nd round 3 other times. For a school in one of the centers of girls HS basketball ... well, that's all you need to know.

Another Positive Step Up for Former ND Point Guard since she started coaching:
- St. John's (worked for Kim Barnes Arico)
- George Washington (recruiting coordinator, guards coach for Jonathan Tsipis)
- Michigan (guards coach for Arico)
- HC at Miami University of Ohio (two consecutive 20-wins seasons in her first -- and only -- two years)

It should be noted that Marquette athletic director Bill Scholl was an administrator at Notre Dame when Duffy was a player so Kelly might've had an easier trip to the front door. Interestingly, ND associate head coach Carol Owens was initially thought of as a prime candidate. Perhaps Scholl's connection to Duffy was key. Or the fact that Duffy is about the same age Kieger was when she took over.

While Marquette is losing a starting lineup of five starters that all scored more than 1,000 points (man, that sounds familiar :eek:), former coach Carolyn Kieger was bringing in a class of 8 prospects, including highly rated guard Shemara Williams from Milwaukee. Williams was apparently upset that Kieger was leaving for Penn State, so Duffy might want to take an Uber over to her house after the press conference.

In any case, great move for Duffy. If she continues to do well, it will give Notre Dame another quality choice for a MM successor (Ivey, Morgan-Cunnigham) when that time comes.

She resigned after an internal review into her program. I would be surprised if she could get another D1 job this fast. She'll probably have to take some time off, maybe latch on as an assistant somewhere, go the D2 route and work her way back up. Remember Connie Yori? She was successful at Nebraska and still hasn't returned to coaching. Not easy when these off the court issues spring up.

AAH is walking into some high expectations. Only one player graduates from the Sweet 16 team.

My sample size is the one game I watched live, but it seemed to me that Danielle Gitzen was far and away their best player. While only one player, that seems like a big loss for them.

But perhaps it can be offset with some offseason improvement from the others.

Gitzen was their best player, but I wouldn't say overwhelmingly so. She averaged 13 ppg (18% of the team's total), and 3 other players averaged 9+ ppg.

True, but she also led them in assists and steals and was 2nd in rebounds.

They'll do really well in the MVC but I don't think anyone should expect a repeat S16 appearance or anything like that.

Tho let's not forget they were 2nd in the MVC and only got in bc of the tourney win over Drake.

Yes, but after starting the season 1-7 they went 24-3 the rest of the way, including 2 wins over Drake and wins over DePaul and Iowa State in the tournament. When you finish that strong and you only lose 1 player to graduation, there will be a certain level of expectations. Whether those expectations are reasonable is perhaps open to debate, but they will be there.
