For those watching UNC-Wisconsin, there was another example of a confusing trend - teams who just brainlessly decide to foul in the last 10 seconds of a half if they have a foul to give. If you have a purpose to it, fine. A hard trap where you reach-in and go for the held ball or a turnover, sure. If you feel like you've been beaten off the dribble, by all means. If the other team has one dominant scorer and you want to try to get the ball out of hands, especially in the second half, then yes. If the other team designed some sort of elaborate play and you mess them up by forcing them to start over, I can see it.

But teams just do it no matter what the situation - they don't even try to play straight up defense. In this case, Wsiconsin was trying to go cast-to-coast in about six seconds. Wisconsin sensed it was coming and tried to heave a halfcourt shot and draw three shots but didn't get the call, so it didn't affect the game. But even if it they had gotten the call, all it would have done was stop the clock with four seconds left, and allow Wisconsin to set something up and advance the ball ahead off an inbounds pass the clock moving, and give them time to run a quick screen. And this was in the first half - so then sometimes the guy committing the foul picks up a couple more in the second half.

It's nice to have a foul to give in that situation as a possible card to play, but you don't have to use it. Teams do score off inbounds passes, too.

Well at least they actually had a foul to give, unlike Nova on the other hand...
