Coach K on UConn

If we win tonight we’re the third team with three coaches to win championships. Kentucky has like seven. Unc has 3 coaches to win championships. I think duke only has one coach to win championships. Duke didn’t emerge that long before us. Why are they in a different color blue blood than us?? We’re going to have as many championships as them if we win. Just with 3 diff coaches in a more limited time span. Just keep winning huskies eventually they can’t deny us!!

Whatever you think about Coach K he's always had great respect for the UConn program and for Calhoun, they're close friends. He also obviously loves Danny and the entire Hurley family.
Yeah I know people hate Duke and Coach K, but I have no animus towards him or Duke whatsoever. I have a high level of respect for what he and Duke have accomplished.

college bball program ranks since 1975, which marked the pre-modern era. programs must have won at least 1 chip to qualify. i used a weighted average of: (Championships x 57%) + (Final Fours x 28.5%) + (Sweet Sixteens x 14.25%) so chips are worth twice as much as final fours which are worth twice as much as sweet sixteens. if we win tonight we tie Lville in 5th (no i'm not pretending vacated seasons didnt happen). the only other criteria i could have added was tourney appearances but i'd rather miss the tourney than lose to a 15 or 16 seed (and that would have dropped us to a tie with IU in 9th).

Shouldn't surprise anyone -- Bobby always enjoyed hanging out with the Huskies

They made four Final Fours in the 1960s and 70s before K got there.

That's why he credited JC for building UConn. Duke already had a track record of success when he was hired.

Imagine being a Duke fan listening to that.
Duke fans know their program won't be the same without Coach K. I always disliked him, but man did I respect him.

You should use 1985 instead of 1975. 85 is the year the tournament went to 64 teams.

Amazed UCLA is that high since 1975, considering that's right after they won 10 Nattys in 12 years. If you start in 1965 instead of 75 their #s would look like Tiger Woods in his prime.

Duke has been ‘a rival’ and this guy seems weazely- but he is not stupid and I don’t know if he ever cheated. He, obviously, respects us and JC. That’s honest. Since Laettener we’ve done well against him. Now, he (or Duke) is not in the same world as the squid. Calipari (and wherever he is coaching) is a complete and total dirtbag. I do not respect him or what he has done - just like Pitino bending rules. Another dirtbag. I don’t know if Mike ever cheated - I don’t think needed to. I respect his coaching ability even more because he respects us. Do it right - and let the chips fall where they may. When you give money and whores to college kids - that’s where I draw the line. I liked Kentucky - then a dirtbag showed up. I liked Louisville then a dirtbag showed up. If a dirtbag showed up at UCONN - I’d be rooting for SDSU. There are some real scummy people out there. I think Danny is doing it right. I’ve always thought Geno was doing it right as well.

I believe Coach K wanted to see us in the ACC back when we were in contention. Perhaps in his retirement years he can once again be an advocate for us to join the ACC.
I would rather be in the big East at this point. I understand the football money but I guess I am an old f..rt and want to see them playing in the conference that started it all.

I think what makes certain teams "blue bloods" is they've done it more consistently over a longer period of time.
We can, rightfully, shout out how no one has won as many Championships as we have in the last 24 years, but the
rejoinder to that is "yeah, UConn has won four championships, but they're not in the Final Eight or Sweet Sixteen all the time like the really good schools".
In fact, if you look at the last twenty years we've had more ups and downs than we had in the ten years after the Dream Season, so the naysayers have a point.
If there was some way to add to the resume...........it would go a long way towards wiping out that thinking!!!!!

The missed Tournaments hurts but, if we win tonight, winning titles in 3 consecutive decades with 3 different coaches establishes (to the naysayers) UConn as a dominant program.

Should do this for the 64+ team bracket era. 1975 is better than all-time (a FF from 1950 is pointless) but the game changed after that.

I was offended by this! We are blue also!
I agree. He quibbled. The correct answer is, “I hate when people say there are no blue bloods in the final four. UConn is a blue blood program.”

And in 3 different conferences (technically AAC=OBE) but you know what I mean.

At Jim’s retirement dinner K was surprisingly super complimentary on his video message. Kept on calling Jim buddy. It was so strange to see at the time.

They had Final Fours and National Title Game appearances before K showed up. They're third all time in Final Fours. They're fourth all time in total wins.

They're more than just K, though he's the only coach to get the a title. Without him they are a better version of St. John's, or like a discount Arizona. Very very good. You add in K, and it's obvious.

.-.
Give him credit. He obviously doesn't have a lot of insecurity. A lot of people would be carrying around a lot of resentment for someone who snatched 2 titles from them.

OTOH

I mean K isn’t infallible though. He thinks Boeheim could coach.

Duke fans know their program won't be the same without Coach K. I always disliked him, but man did I respect him.

Was talking to a Duke fan the other night and I asked what he thought of Scheyer. He said it was a good move to hire from within rather than bring in an outsider. I said, good luck with that!

Four decades.

1990s (check)
2000s (check)
2010s (double check)
2020s (if we win tonight)

Duke is in the same boat (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015) but would need to win one of the next six to extend.

UNC's streak currently goes to the 1980s but they'd need to win to extend.

And...that's it. Kansas went from 1988 to 2008 to 2022, so no active streak.
Kentucky didn't win in the 2000s.
UCLA and Indiana are in multiple decade droughts.

All in all, it's pretty damn impressive...

It's really important to be regularly in the tournament. No real reason this program shouldn't be able to rip off a bunch of appearances in a row paired with some deep runs. UConn has only gone to the NCAA 5 times in a row twice (once in the 1960s, once in the 2000s). We should have a double digit streak going.

Agreed. I think that's why us UConn fans always feel anxious/eager for UConn to advance far in the NCAAT when they have a high seed and it's because UConn isn't in the NCAAT nearly every year. The last 9 years 2015 (inclusive) - 2023 really didn't see much winning in the NCAAT and they only appeared 3 times within that span.
