>>(Joe) Williams, a sophomore, will try to lighten the load of running back Lyle McCombs and add another dimension to the UConn offense this season.

"[McCombs] can't take all the carries, you got to have a sidekick," said UConn running backs coach Kermit Buggs. "You have to have a dynamic duo in this day and age in college football. You got to have a backup. I see him getting anywhere from 10-12 carries a game."<<

This is very encouraging because is signals a change in philosophy, which signals change.

Weist was part of an offense last year that ran around 490 times and only passed about 370 times.

They set up the pass with the run so we need at least 2 capable backs.

Only shows more how dumb last year's RB decisions were. Now just can wildcat and already touchdown per game better.

Talk is great, but we desperately need a rb(s) to step up. Trotting out two backs that average 3.5 yards a carry does nothing.

If the staff gave another back 25% of carries last year and he averaged 3.5 ypc would you be happy?

I like the Reuben Frank to DE move. Could improve both positions.

Perhaps, if it meant a better more rested McCombs.

And I would like to see more than one other back, let's get carries for four backs. Ad in games, go with the hot hand.

Nobody knows what the end result would've been. To be fair, I think the running game woes had much more to do with the OL than the RB. But when the results at the end of the year are abysmal, it opens it up to criticism.

The jaguar comments last year were one of the stupidest quotes you can hear from a HC at the FBS level (IMO - for you Loop). Now you hire a guy who comes in and gives a quote that cannot contradict those jaguar comments more if he tried.

Makes you wonder WTF is going on in terms of the direction of the program.

Hey, I'm not defending those statements. It was a pretty dumb thing to say. But if we fired someone every time they said something incredibly stupid, unemployment in this country would be 100%. Most of us just live secure with the knowledge that most of those statements don't end up on TV.

My take from all of this is that we have two new offensive assistant coaches (Weist & Buggs) who actually show some energy and enthusiasm, something that from all appearances only existed with a couple of defensive assistants over the last two seasons. This should be of at least some benefit going forward.

It's one thing to say it. It's another thing to actually do it while producing one of the most impotent running games in the entire nation.

It is always nice to have new coaches after a dismal performance. Looking forward to seeing what these guys could do. I like the Kermit Buggs signing from the start, although most of the Boneyard was lukewarm. Loved what recruits had to say about him at Penn State, and liked the areas he recruited.

Ok. What was the jaguar talk last season? How did I miss that?

I hope Weist and Buggs aren't put on island by Pasqualoni and .

From A Des column in March last year:

>>The Huskies are going to be deep at running back as you know but Pasqualoni prefers a guy – always has – who can carry the load.

“I don’t want a guy that’s got to come out of the game. I don’t want a guy that’s saying I’m tired take me out. I don’t want a Jaguar. Do you know what a Jaguar is? The Jaguar is always in the shop, always breaking down so I don’t want a Jaguar (I busted a gut on that one). I want a durable guy and if we put him the game he stays in the game and he stays in the game. We’re trying to develop the depth we have but I’m all for one guy staying out there. Now we’re going to use the talents and ability we have but I want them all to be able to do it if you know what I mean.”

John Silver of the Manchester Journal-Inquirer then asked Pasqualoni if he ever owned a Jaguar to which the coach responded, “no but I’ve been around a ton of running backs that are Jaguars I’ll tell you that – drive me crazy.”<<

Things "seem" to be moving in the right direction w/ the new additions - guess we will only see for sure come Septmember 14 (don't expect to see much against Towson). Tired of looking in rear view mirror all the time.

I think what we are seeing are players responding to a tough but positive and energetic coach instead of an old who just screamed all the time.

Looking at the stats, it would seem that we didn't have a Jaguar, but a John Deere instead.

3.5 yds x 3 downs = 10.5 = marching down the field, winning the TOP battle and resting the defense = winning. Overly simplified, I know, but you get the point.

on edit: just saw Nostical's point...great minds...
