In 1913 the Boston Braves finished in 5th place in the National League. 1914 looked like it was going to be much worse. On July 4th they lost a double headers to the Dodgers and were in last place with a 26 - 40 record. They were 15 games behind. Then something magic happened. They went 68-19 .782 to win the pennant by 11.5 games. They swept the mighty Philadelphia A's in four games to win the World Series. That A's team was not used to losing and had such great players as Eddie Collins, Stuffy McInnis, Home Run Baker, Eddie Plank and Chief Bender. The Braves would settle back into mediocrity in the following years.
On August 31st, 2011 the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 9-5 behind Josh Beckett to take a 1.5 game lead in the AL East. Their record was 83-52 .615. Arguably one of the best, if not the best team in baseball. The September collapse is history. Fast forward to 2012. In their last 36 games the Red Sox are 10-26 .278, arguably the worst team in baseball. Who knew that things could get this bad this quickly? What will 2013 bring?
