With Akok in the fold we are now number 10 on ESPN. #16 on 247. Somehow Rivals has us at 59.
I was going to post this last night. Rivals I don’t think has Akok as a commit. I saw they only had us as having two recruits

Rivals took Akok out of 2019 and put him in 2018, so they have us with only Bouk and Gaffney for 2019.

Wonder how much Kofi would bump us up.
Would put us at #6 on 247. Probably top 5 on ESPN.

How many burger boys will be this recruiting class?
Currently none.

If we land Achiuwa there’s one. Kofi would be second closest, but there’s a lot of good big men in this class so I’d give him like a 40% chance.

When have we ever won a NC with great classes?

Give me a couple of 50+ guys every year :)

PS: I'm not complaining if we do better

For those getting too obsessed with recruit rankings, take a look at the @tcf15 video clip posted in the Home and Home with Florida thread. That 3 minutes featured Phil Nolan, Terrence Samuel, Ryan Boatright, Shabazz Napier and Deandre Daniels going off for an 11-0 run. Both Nolan and Samuel were 3 stars rated #118.

What happened with Samuel? He played so well in the tournaments, especially against Villanova and this stretch against Florida. It's like he disappeared the next year.

Ummm, every time we've won a NC.
Why do people seem to forget that all our best teams were loaded with studs?

Rip and KEA were McD AAs
Villanueva and Taliek were, not to mention that Gordon (ESPN had him 25) and Anderson (17) were super highly ranked.
Kemba/Oriakhi on 2011.
That's neglecting some very good teams from the 90s and 00s that were absolutely stacked.

2014 had Daniels who was a Top 10 player, and Bazz/Boat were both highly ranked. Omar Calhoun was hurt, but he was a borderline McD AA when healthy.

He wasn't good other than the minutes he played against Nova, Iowa State, and Florida. He was a great little spark on that run but all his flaws were exposed the next year and at Penn State and USF. To be honest outside of the minutes he gave in the tournament he played below his high school ranking. Bazz, Boat, and Daniels were all highly ranked studs coming out of high school. Napier's ranking is a bit scewed because at the end he skipped a class to come to UConn.

We have no shortage of guys in the 100+ range and the guys ranked higher than that (Gilbert and Wilson) are shaking off considerable rust after not playing much basketball in recent years.

Role players are great, but we need (and are hopefully already getting) the guys who will play the Boatright/Napier/Daniels roles on future teams, not the Nolan/Samuel roles.

Really? The class everyone hated won two, this board hated that 2010 class and we even "landed the wrong Lamb". The wheels were coming off

2004: Meka was a 100+ recruit when he arrived without fanfare.

1999 had two top 20 recruits leading the way

How many one and done's have we won a NC with? that would be zero

The only guys that arrived on campus a lottery pick are Gay & AD, maybe Chaz

We won with much lower rated classes than anybody else, and we did it consistently. We obviously had better talent than recruiting services realized

I've always wondered the same thing, I feel like a lot of people like the little engine that could narrative. We haven't had a ton of McD's all-americans but every one of our teams after 89-90 that did damage in the tournament or won it all was chock-full of top 50 and top 100 recruits.

Even then, most of our role players in the past were pretty highly ranked.

Just title teams:

1999

Starters
PG - KEA (Top 15, McAA)
SG - Moore (Top 40)
SF - Hamilton (Top 25, McAA)
PF - Freeman (Top 50)
C - Voshkul

Bench
G - Jones (Top 45)
G - Mouring (Top 75)
PF - Saunders (Top 75)

2004

Starters

PG - Brown (Top 15, McAA)
SG - Gordon (Top 40)
SF - Anderson (Top 25)
PF - Boone (Top 75--what services had him ranked were a bit over the map)
C - Okafor (Top 100--what services had him ranked, had him around 80)

Bench

G/F - Brown (Top 40)
F - Villanueva (Top 10, McAA)

2011

Starters (sort of)

PG - Kemba (Top 15, McAA)
SG - Bazz (Top 75...but reclassed)
SF - Lamb (Top 75)
PF - Roscoe (Top 35)
C - Oriakhi (Top 20, McAA)

Bench

G/F - Coombs-McDaniel (Top 50)

2014

Starters

PG - Bazz (Top 75)
SG - Boat (Top 60)
SF - Giffey
PF - Daniels (Top 20)
C - Brimah

Bench

G - Omar (Top 40)
F - Facey (Top 100)

***

This is to say that the 2014 team was a bit of an anomaly, though the brilliance of the Top 3 were no joke.

2004: Meka was a 100+ recruit when he arrived without fanfare.

The era of 1 and dones isn't long. Kentucky with Calipari is the one who really instituted it in 2010. We've won 2 in that era. Kentucky and Duke each won a title with 1-and-dones, though. And the teams that win may not have 1-and-dones, but they have been stocked with Top 25-50 players.

We caught lightning in a bottle in 2014. Imagining we could recreate that again is absurd.
