This is my favorite modern Christmas song. John McCutcheon wrote it and sings it here (I've seen him and didn't know he played guitar, never mind as well as in this video). I have it on an album by an Irish duo called Aengus. The story is beautiful and achingly sad, the moreso because it's true.
