Ultimately it comes down to schools on the 'outside' needing to have an increased risk tolerance, being less selective, etc.

For a non-elite school to attract elite talent they have to take more chances and capitalize in certain aspects.

Hiring their high school coach, overpaying with NIL money, recruiting their teammate, ignoring injury/academic/behavioral issues, ignoring repeated transferring, etc.

Some of the money can be recouped in ticket sales, merchandise sales, donations, tournament revenue, etc. If an in-season tournament has not completed their team selection...inviting the school with the #1 recruit could be enticing. If AJ blows up in college/NBA...then perhaps he becomes their biggest 'recruiter', booster, etc.

The amount could just be an exaggeration like this article mentions.

We didn't ask about this specifically for our series, but one coach I spoke with did go out of his way to make the point that the amount of NIL money being requested and paid is significantly higher than it was just two years ago. Is every player getting every penny he's reportedly supposed to get? Absolutely not. There are lots of exaggerations in the media. That's a consensus among coaches. But what's also a consensus is that the so-called going rate for impactful players has increased quite a bit and quickly.

Why? I’d say the majority of the money he’ll get isn't even for playing the season, it’s so if this kid turns out to be Jordan/Lebron/Kobe level then for the rest of his career he’s always associated with that school. They‘ll get more notoriety, better recruits in the future. UNC is still getting recruits because of Jordan 40 years later.

It's amazing that people don't get this. People talk all the time about UConn needing star power in the NBA again but then claim nobody will care if BYU has one. And the reality is that it won't even matter how good he actually is in the NBA, they'll get a return on that money just from being mentioned thousands of times when he's a lottery pick

What's the probability of him being at that level?

Durant went to Texas but what has it done for them? Does anyone think about Texas when talking about Durant? He was there for only 1 year. I bet most people can't even remember what he did there. And he was really good his 1 year.

Curry went to Davidson. What has it done for them? And he was there for more than 1 year.

I completely disagree with you that spending $7-$9 million on Dybantsa will be worth it.

… you don’t think those 2 guys helped the recruiting and status of those 2 programs? Tatum, Kyrie, Zion at Duke?

it can be a catalyst but not sufficient by itself without other necessary ingredients. byu has most of the ingredients but don't ever become a mainstream big brand. they prob never aimed for that but just to put themselves on the map
