Reed was a Beast and totally dominated on both ends of the court with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocks. When Tarris plays like this, we are very difficult to beat. He was a man amongst boys and exposed SJU’s weakness in the paint. His domination was both in quality of play and Will. He kept his intensity and logged 30 minutes.

Our defense was exceptional, holding St John’s 2 for 28 on FG’s the second half. Their top scorer had just 10 points.

How do we totally dominate except for one category fouls/FTA’s? We had 18 fouls to their 11 and 11 foul shots to St John’s 18, despite a 32 point win. O’Connell’s crew was definitely SJU MVP this game. The officiating was so embarassing that they were shamed into having to overrule 3 calls upon review. In fact, Hurley rubbed their nose in it when he made a successful appeal when we had a huge lead late. Why is their initial instinct always to call anything even remotely close against us? Including not calling an obvious flagrant foul. They and the Big East office need to do some self inspection.

We outshot St John’s FG wise 47% to 20%, thanks to layups and points in the paint, but the 3pt % was horrible for both teams (UConn 28% to SJU 25%).

I loved our assist to turnover ratio 20 to 5 (or 4 to 1 ratio). Hurley has Reed playing the hedge the way Donovan did, playing underneath it and staying more with the Big. That puts him in better position to block shots and rebound.

While our bench only delivered 11 points, they gave us exactly what we needed tonight with defense, 9 rebounds and zero turnovers. I thought Ross gave us a spark off the bench, despite a quiet 4 points. His defense and 4 rebounds gave us energy and toughness. Smith had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Reibe’s main contribution tonight was giving us 5 fouls in the trenches that Reed did not pick up. Obviously, he needs to get stronger to be more effective in these rough games. Anyone know why Stewart did not play after doing well last game?

Demary only had 7 points but played tough with 8 rebounds, 5 assists and only 1 turnover. Smith had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

While Mullins needs to get stronger, but in addition to an elite skillset (shots just touching bottom of net etc), he also is an elite athlete and his dunk today showed it. His 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal to go along with 9 points, exhibited that athleticism too. We need to get a Reed like big body and have Mullins return to be a star next season along with Ball/Demary. Adding Alex’s shots to his plate next season would give him plenty of opportunity as would a summer in the weight room. He would be a top 5 pick.

Karaban and Ball gave us a combined 50% shooting (10-20) for 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. They displayed good leadership on the court and Alex was even told by the ref to tone down his post play celebrating. They played our most minutes (Karaban 35, Ball 32) and literarily would not let our team take the foot off the gas, a weakness in many of our Big East games.

Proud of our guys on the team, the coaches not being stubborn and making adjustments and the Hartford fans. It was a great atmosphere and the team and fans were on the same page. The students showed up and were great considering many are better students than we probably were - maybe more nerdy than experienced playing /knowing basketball?

Overall, tonight ended any conversation, about the location of our best home court advantage and after over 3 years of wins in Hartford the data backs that up. I love Gampel and have seats there but this was big time tonight. Thank you students, who put their books down and came to Hartford to learn about and participate in an intense home court advantage.

I see only 3 turnovers in the box score. Maybe they took the one away where we let the clock expire at the end.

I like your mention of Mullins returning as I see it as a possibility. This class is so loaded, I think he would benefit greatly by staying another year, getting stronger and most likely being a higher draft pick in 2027. Doesn’t hurt that he will get paid for staying, unlike in the past.

I have the opposite feeling about the refs. For once, we were allowed to match physicality without being punished. The first whistle of the second half came around 12:30 left when it was a 20+ point game. I’d bet over half of St John’s FTs came after that point. Extended garbage time. Our lead was built and expanded on the back of extremely physical basketball where the officials let us play the way the other team was playing. That’s what we’ve been begging for all year. Not perfect, but shoutout to the refs who were not trigger happy on the whistle last night

Tarris was a monster. He can do this any time he wants, ideally with Reibe able to give him some rest to prevent burnout. But to your point, Reibe gave 5 fouls that did not go to Reed. Very important that Reed was able to stay on the floor

Alex played a great game. Solo stayed within himself. Braylon’s 3-9 includes 3-8 from three (37.5%), so it’s all good. For some reason I have no fear when he pulls those early deep threes. Shooters shoot.

Silas 7pts, 8reb, 5ast, most importantly only 1 TO. He maintained control all night and showed some attitude late with Zuby and Prey, SJU’s two biggest guys. Great overall game. We didn’t need him to go for 20+ like we did last time, a testament to how others stepped up and how Silas got them the ball in their spots

Ross and Mali were great off the bench. Ross’ box score shows 0-3 from three but I’m not worried. 2 of them were great looks with no hesitation. 1 was a 40ft grenade. The two shots he did make (fast break dunk and midrange jumper) were much more impactful. Mali was Diarra-esque with his energy

Stewart was out for injury, knee inflammation

Good summary! The game was a joy to watch- except the refs. They are really frustrating and at the top of my list why I want us to leave the BE. The calls are consistently one sided. You would think they would want us to succeed as the rest of the league is a dumpster fire.

I thought the refs were pretty good except for the one no-call when the player grabbed Karaban's arm on the shot attempt. The were good at letting Karaban wall up on Hopkins and not let call a foul after he lowers his shoulder, creates space and then jumps into the defender he just knocked back. That seems to be his go to move and last night the refs were letting Karaban go vertical after the shoulder and not call a foul on him. It clearly frustrated Hopkins at times.

Reed was great. He looks mobile and springy again. It also helps him when the passes in to him are perfect or near perfect. There weren't many passes where he had to gather the ball 4 or 5 feet further out from where he was posting.

Nice to see 20 assists and only 5 turnovers and at least one of those was just letting the shot clock expire.

Won by 32 and only shot 28% from 3.

I give Silas a lot of credit like most here. He could have easily come in and tried to do too much because of his game in MSG. He just ran the offense, played good D and did what it took to win.

If I had to say anything negative, it would be that Reibe needs to stay foul like he did last night. Zubey is a tough matchup, but he had a few fouls he easily could have avoided. When guys drive, he needs to stop reaching in and just go up vertical. Make them shoot over you, and if they hit, they hit and move on to the next play. With the short turnarounds coming up in tournament play, Reed will need more of a rest here and there. And Malachi needs to let someone hunt for a shot deep in the shot clock when he has a taller guy on him. Otherwise, he and Ross were great off the bench.

Hopefully, the last few games are the start of another deep run.

You lose credibility when you complain about the refs even when they’re fine.

The point of having all the calls overturned is valid.

Heck an MLB had five straight contested ball/strike calls overturned using the ABS review process. Technology is opening up the books on refs' bias in their initial assessment.

You can throw in the initial call to give the Johnnies the put back basket as time expired in the first half. It was an obvious no basket, but the refs initially gave the points to the Johnnies only to have to pull them off the board.

Honestly it sounds like you're tired of hearing people complain about the officiating. Did you watch the game? His points are valid, regardless of the fact UConn took St Johns to the mat last night.

Agree. And it's moreso the frustrating obvious no-calls that teams get away with all game long.

Prey had so many blatant grabs, holds, pushes trying to defend Tarris and also when he was trying to set screens, it was ridiculous. I could see them clear as day from up in section 214.

The kid should have fouled out quicker than Reibe. The fact that he only got called for 3 fouls was an embarassing joke.

I saw a couple missed calls but yeah I watched the game, nothing changed the way the game was played.

I bet I hate refs more than 99% of people on earth, and I saw some misses on both ends, but the game wasn’t controlled by the refs like it is often in the BE, so complaining today seems silly.

I apologize to you, for not being outaged by refs being decent but not perfect.

But what can you do about it? Complaining doesn't solve for a thing.
I said having a crowd react to them unlike the banana nonsense actually serves a purpose. Given the atmosphere and replays on the video screen they back off all 3 times.
When we win every category but foul shot attempts that’s a problem. In our two Big East losses our opponents had 63 FTA to 30 FTA. We won last night and that was the only major statistical category we got beat in despite otherwise total domination.

Thank you for being consistent despite a 32 point win, calling out stuff that will make us lose in a closer game.

And when he says Mullins should come back instead of going in the lottery
I said the same thing about a guy that was on the team last season. Was I wrong? Both Clingan and Castle, I thought it was in their interest to leave.
Mullins will have a great career regardless, but would like to see him get stronger so he can fully show off his gifted and hard earned skills.

Two huge statistics from last night:
Point in the Paint: 42 UConn to 12 SJU
Fast Break Points: 14 UConn to 0 SJU
We needed to improve in both areas and at least for last night we did.

The usual issue of letting other teams clutch and grab us with impunity while we're punished for aggressive on-ball defense wasn't as prevalent, but BE refs can only keep their biases -- whether in the interests of the conference (i.e. not having us dominate) or personal issues with Hurley -- hidden for so long.

Getting 30% of the 50/50 calls, and that many overturned, says something.

Obviously a lot to like. Specially tarris got much better low post position allowing for dunks and layups instead of 8 foot hooks. Please keep establishing that deep position. Ball took less shots which is much preferred to hoisting up endless 3’s. Keep being selective and share the ball. The 3 shooting was better than it looked. Alex and silas had 3 pointers half way down and perhaps mullins as well. Hopefully danny keeps using the high hedge less and drop coverage more. Tarris is much more effective in drop coverage and when he is not on the bench in foul trouble.

And when he says Mullins should come back instead of going in the lottery. Agree we need a “muscle power forward” next year alongside Reibe though
Mullins should come back and will be top 5. This year is ridiculously loaded. Hawk made some money but his career is circling the drain. He was not ready and would have had a long career with one more year in college imo. In the new nil era you don’t need to rush things. Braylon is an amazing talent but could get buried on the bench if he is not physically ready. If he were my kid, I would have him stay. How is life working out for our first rounder last year, not well.
