Chief’s Briefs - Seton Hall Edition

Tarris is your starter, make it work staff. Seems like they are clinging(no pun) to the 2 headed monster concept for too long. Both guys have moments, but Reed brings more, and more potential. Use him until you can't(needs a blow or fouls out)

One thing I noticed is both on the inbounds plays and half court sets we don’t set good strong screens. That really hurts us.
We don't set good screens ever. Last year the solid screens - and the ability of the cutter using the screen to rub his man off on it - were key. This year the screener often pulls out of the screen before contact, and/or the cutter is leaving too much space for the defender to stay in position.

In a game with 500000 missed shots, Tarris Reed had 0 defensive rebounds.

He stinks.

Everything about the team runs better with Samson. Everything.
Not so much... The guy has zero clue how to box out or position himself for a rebound, and unbelievably still gets called for moving screens and very stupid reach in fouls (albeit so does Reed on that one).

Excellent observations. So true.

I agree Reed has much more upside. It is also disappointing Johnson is repeating mistakes he’s made the last 3 years.

Tarris can rebound, but it is fair to think he's in a bit of funk in recent games, and lack of defensive rebounding is an indicator of that. Offensive rebounding is how he scores and he may be a little more motivated to get the ball on the offensive end. Over the last 4 games, Tarris has had 17 offensive rebounds and 8 defensive rebounds. Defensive rebounds are generally easier to get.

If Tarris is checking out on defense, that is a big problem for the coaches. This team needs to be firing on all cylinders to go far.

I wonder if there might be a stalemate between coach and player, Hurley wants him to be a high-motor Kodiak bear before he gets more usage, and Tarris gets discouraged and downregulates his motor by his lack of usage.
I surmised some of the same but have no clue if it’s true.

Also who is teaching the screeners to move their knees out right before the screen is set. They literally can be called for an offensive foul 9 times out of 10. It's surprising that it is not called on them more often.

I hope the screening improves. It’s a fundamental part of basketball and there’s no legitimate reason why we should not be doing it better.

Yet another understatement!
