We did not make basic plays today and tried to compensate by doing some foolish stuff.
There are only so many times you can let the other team back in the game and with the refs calling no contact fouls against our opponent down the stretch including when McNeeley was knocked to the floor on an inbound play that led to the key 5 second violation.
While both centers played poorly, I question why we went most of the time with a senior who still makes so so many mistakes. I think Reed overall understands the game better and he is stronger with better hands.
I also think late in the contest, McNeeley may have injuried his ankle to some extent which made all our mistakes hurt even more. That is perhaps why he inbounded the ball. In that play we did the amazing, with the lead we ran zero time off the clock by throwing it out of bounds the length of the court.
One thing I noticed is both on the inbounds plays and half court sets we don’t set good strong screens. That really hurts us.
Despite, his offensive struggles Karaban has become one of our best defensive players and best shot blocker without fouling.
We need to go with a starting lineup of McNeeley, Karaban, Reed, Ball and Diarra. With Stewart the first guy off the bench for any position but point guard. Mahaney is the next guard in after that. Johnson should be a tempo guy off the bench.
Two good signs in this otherwise trainwreck today that included 16 ugly turnovers were Karaban looking better on offense and Diarra having a solid game but not playing enough minutes. He shot foul shots well and we did a poor job not getting him the ball on inbounds plays.
We did out rebound Hall (41- 35) and out assist them (15 to 9). Mental mistakes, strange rotations, turnovers and poor 30% 3 point shooting cost us the game.
