Diarra is averaging 18mpg to start the season which is in line with the 19mpg he averaged as BE 6th man of the year. I don’t see his minutes going up much unless he moves to the starting lineup. I would also like to continue seeing a ~25/15 mpg split between Reed and Samson. Not sure how you can think our ceiling is higher with Samson than it is with Reed based on what we’ve seen. Samson is averaging 6.5-2-1.5 while Reed is averaging 13-9.5-1

What I meant with SJ is that he can't have 9 fouls in 27 minutes over two games v. cupcakes. One of the offseason goals, especially since Tarris was going to be unk, was exactly for Samson to work on this (and rebounding). He needs to be available for 20-25, whether or not he sees those minutes is up to what matchup Hurley wants to exploit. My statement was to maximize our offense, it wasn't meant to be an either/or argument between the players.

Likewise with Hassan. He is an entirely different player than Aiden and there will be plenty of games where he gets major minutes.

Minutes distribution this year will be absolutely wild. While I hope that we settle on another consistent 15+ score aside AK, this non con is going to be a yo-yo while Dan Hurley figures out what we truly have.

Sometimes in this half court Euro BB talk a true PG isn’t appreciated until you receive full court defensive pressure, as you will in the Big East. Also, teams are still best when the run and you need defense, rebounding and a guy who can push the ball with his eyes looking up.

To add to your statement...when Hass pushes, he's an absolute threat to go coast to coast. I've not looked at any advanced metrics, but my eye tells me he's borderline elite at finishing. I won't take that skill for granted, I mean I remember the years when we botched fast break after fast break.

He's a 48/38/75 shooter, with swagger, leadership, +defense, and an absolute lionheart. I think he gets lost in the shuffle on this team by our fans, like no one has truly appreciated his jump last year under Hurley.

Without Diarra our defense is uninspiring. He played poorly the first half but got the team going 5 minutes into the second half.

I am from the Red Auerbach and Jim Calhoun camp of defensive pressure and fast break basketball. Other guys on our team can play that style, Ross, Johnson, Ball, Alex as a rebounder and trailing shooter, and perhaps McNeeley as a rebounder and guy who can fill the lanes and shoot. But, Hassan is the only guy I have seen on this years team who can light that match both defensively and offensively.

Team defense triggers offensive runs ie: that 30-0 run last year, especially when there is some kind of break from a rebound vs a made basket where the opposing defense sets up.
This is a season work in progress for Hurley but for 2 games in I’m pretty happy with what I have seen. Even if Maui doesn’t go perfect we shouldn’t lose sight of that.

I think Johnson is trying too hard on defense. Look at his stats per 40 minutes this year vs. his career:

Blocks: 7.4 blocks/40 minutes vs 2.3 blocks/40 for his career.
PF: 13.3 fouls/40 minutes vs 7.6 fouls/40 minutes for his career.
Steals: 3.0 steals/40 minutes vs 1.1 steals/40 minutes for his career.
