Chief’s Briefs: DePaul Edition

I think we scored off both of Reeds passes out of the post, need more. Not only for open looks, take away the black hole effect, but because he should pass it out then dig in lower and closer so they can throw it in again in better position to score the ball.

Good win, slow start was a bit scary but they recovered. I will say DePaul plays hard for sure, but also got away with murder. Lots of holding on anyone driving to the hole as well as our kids trying to use screens.

I think it’ll be like that all year seems to be the pattern as I watch Big East games. The Hall will be tortuous to watch I promise.

DePaul came out with an unsustainable level of intensity and physicality. It was obvious how this game was going to play out after the first five minutes.

16 of their 30 first half points came off turnovers. In no world was that going to be sustainable for them either.

This has been a common theme among Big East opponents this year and last. After Uconn won their B2B, it seems coaches are instilling their teams to come out with max fire and intensity. Problem is, with all of Uconn's movement, they get worn down over time.

Easiest money of my life to take the Uconn live bet -10.5 when they were down 15-7 early in the 1st half.

Karaban (21) and Reed (14) accounted for almost 50% of our points. We have depth but then there are scorers.

Our goal should be to have twice as many assists as turnovers. Today, we finished at 15 each. Six players had 2 turnovers and two had 1 (plus I assume a team turnover?), so it’s a team effort. About half were forced but the other half were careless with some degree of pressure. I am sure that will be a practice focus.

Additionally, it is not only not having a turnover but making them pay for over committted defense. Full court, inbounds or half court, the opportunity is there to get better.

Demary played well except for 1-3 from 3PT. His 13 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds made progress towards a triple double. Perhaps, most encouraging was going 6-7 from FT. In road games especially our pg needs to make their foul shots.

Ross and Stewart played ok but have had better games. Mullins hit some great shots late but he still doesn’t look comfortable out there at times, despite his shot confidence.
Additionally, he was wide open a few times and did not get the ball. There needs to be better awareness when we have a shooter of his caliber open.

We led rebounding by 12 (40-28) and assists by 8 (15-7) and these are usually our barometer to indicate good outcomes.

Our shooting percentage outshined their’s in every category FG (47% - 36%), 3PT (33% - 23%), FT (75% - 52%). Some of it was our defense plus they are not a great shooting team.

I would be remiss, despite winning by 18 on the road, if I did not say how much Solo Ball was missed. Having that additional weapon out there opens up our offense in many ways.

When Mullins finds his groove and Solo is in, there will be 3 very capable 3 pt. shooters on the floor with those 2 plus AK.

Go ahead and double any of them. It's Demary's job to hit the open shooter or hit Reed down low. I am confident he or Malachai will get better and better as the season goes on and this is Trouble with a capital T for the other guys.

Good point about passing out from the post and then getting better position and getting the ball back. Often that is easier than backing a guy down,which often draws help.
 
To me the big Takeaway is that with solo out Alex put the team on his shoulders and carried them to victory. I'm not sure that he could have done that last year.

But it also frees up a teammate when an opponent moves to double the post. The post man has to capitalize on that when possible.

Missouri was caught napping again, similar to when the St Louis Rams left. The stadium was built in 1972. Almost 50 years later, time for a new one. I used to work for a company that had a sales office in Overland Park, KS (Southwest of KC). Nice area. About a 40 minute drive to Lawrence and an hour to Topeka.
Did they say where in KS for the stadium? May be like Giants and Jets moving to MetLife. Missouri fans should be happy they still have relatively local access rather than the team packing and moving to a bigger, more affluent market far away. Missouri thinks very provincial like the CRDA.

But it creates one more fast break opportunity for your opponent. Depending on offense/defensive rebound split.

Agree, Alex led the way both with his play and leadership. I actually even liked the fact he threw an elbow after being consistently grabbed, which drew attention to it. While they were in the flagrant review they couldn’t help but see the contact going the other way first.
 
Wyandotte County (new stadium) is only about 20 minutes from KC, Missouri. My guess is probably near I-70 and I-435 intersection.
