I am in need of “Boneyard Expertise” (I use that term loosely). Heading to Philly for a week for my kid’s camp. Looking for a cheesesteak recommendation beyond the typical tourist destinations. Where do the locals go? Thanks!

Deli on 4th on Fayette Street in Conshohocken has the best Philly steak grinders in the world. I don't understand how theirs can be so much better than everyone else's, but they are. It is about a 20 minute drive out from downtown Philly. I went about a year ago after not having been for 5 or 6 years, and their Philly steaks had actually gotten better, which I didn't think was possible. I was in Conshohocken a lot back in the late 2000's for about a year long work project, and would go to this place once a week. I have never found a place in Connecticut that is close to this.

Two recommendations:

1) If you are going to be a snowflake about hygiene, don't go. This is a corner deli/sandwich shop, and your shoes may stick to the floor. You are going there for a Philly steak, not to have surgery.

2) Do not go before a business meeting. The Philly steaks are designed to taste great, not to be gentle on your digestive system. The Philly steaks are worth the pain you may feel afterward.

For those not in Philly Jersey Mikes makes a helluva one, steak, cheese onions, peppers. Used to D’Angelos did before most closed. Jersey Mikes with extra meat, the large is about $18. Is there a better one in Connecticut?

I was just in Philly last week and went to Skinny Joe's. It was really good. The Steak with Cooper Sharp was excellent. They also have particularly good Chicken Cheesesteaks.

Others that are excellent are Cafe Carmela, Angelos, Jim's Steaks.
"Cooper Sharp With" is my go to order.

Jersey Mike's is Excellent for a chain restaurant.

I’m a newish John’s Roast Pork loyalist.

NOT Pats and Genos unless you want a photo op.

As a sidenote, if you want pizza, Eda’s Pizza is supposedly the most similar to New Haven style in Philly. Haven’t been there to confirm yet though.

It is surprisingly good. I like the variation with jalapeños. The Big Kahuna. The peppers are pretty mild but add a nice flavor. The steak is lean with no gristle or fat. The lean meat makes it for me. It’s a good sandwich.

Jersey Mikes uses good quality meat, especially for a chain. I love a great French Dip and Jersey Mikes should offer one. It is hard to find them super lean and tender with pink roast beef. The tendency to slice up a fatty rib eye is too common these days. The gristle is so gross in a sandwich, you can’t even see it coming. Nothing like tender and lean medium roast beef on a sandwich.

Boccella's Deli in Ardmore has the best cheesesteak in the area! It is right around the corner from Merion Golf Club and awesome.

DiNic’s roast pork reading terminal market (closed on Sunday). Friggin out of sight.
That's the place I posted above that Deepster recommended. When it comes to food he's the man. Now if Fishy gives a food recommendation? Skip right over it. Unless cardboard is delectable to you.

Meh the jersey mikes cheese tastes weird and the peppers are drenched in corn syrup. You're going to get a better sandwich at some random Italian restaurant that does subs too

Well, the best in my opinion used to be Abners' on 38th St., but I'm pretty sure that closed a few years ago.

Jim's makes a good steak and is one of the better places to eat it. Plus, it's right on South Street so it's a fun place to walk around anyway. I used to eat them upstairs and watch people head in and out of Zipperheads back in the day. IYKYK

If you’re not headed to Philly - obviously a drive for some but I’m a big fan of Ziggy Bombs in Worcester, I also believe they have a store on BU’s campus.

They have also been in the process of opening a store in Leicester for a year as well.

…and that was your Worcester County steak sandwich update.

Never heard of it. My son worked one summer right next to this on Franklin Street, he loves to try good food places, and he never mentioned it.

I'll have to check it out after I have my yearly physical.
