CCSU Post Game Thread

Concerning that our D-line was that invisible against an FCS school that started three freshmen on their O-line.

Random thoughts. Will have to watch game to formulate fill thoughts. Was excited for season and overall happy this morning:

  1. First time in yesrs I was unable to tailgate before gsme, was encouraged by traffic around 1 pm and was surprised how full lots were. That said 30k is fair estimate for crowd. And its beyter than I thought.
  2. Offense did what we thought after shaky start. Good weapons. Look part overall, but as other said Joe left a lot out there. When they watch all 22 there were guys running uncovered that he missed consistently. He also was not overly accurate.
  3. Bell. Awesome. Receivers and backs are really good. Depth seems really good too.
  4. Kicker is really good despite miss.
  5. Defense has issues many point out. Bend but dont break feel at best. That said, last year they got better and better game by game. Also biggest improvement week 1 to 2. I hope so otherwise we will need to score 50 to win next week.
  6. Just happy its football and I can expect us to look like a legit D1 operation and the team delivers on that. We may not be great but we are light years ahead of 4 years ago.

How was the field condition? I know there were concerns after concert.
It was fine, I’m on the band and found no issues with it while marching. The players also didn’t seem to have any issues.
You can see here where/why the sidelines took a beating but the actual playing field looked good.

Kind of scary to read JM's comments about the injury to Malachi McLean. "Not a head injury and not life threatening, but he's very concerned".

Let's give him our best wishes and hope JM is just being a very cautious coach.
Was watching in my seats. He was walking around after the play and then just dropped face down and motionless. Looked like the refs whistled really quick when it happened and the other teammates seemed to watch it happen too because they reacted and seemed the trainers were headed out quickly. Scary to watch.

1. You can't get to 2-0 if you don't win the first game.
2. Two minutes of WTF followed by 58 minutes of what we expected.
3. Took a couple of series but left side of the line was dominant.
4. Chan went from not being on the two deep earlier this week to starting.
5. Skill players appear to he skillful.
6. Defense working as a unit is a work in progress. Stunts/blitz timing a bit off.
7. Defensive penalties on 3rd down in which there was a stop has to stop.
8. I knew Freeman was gonna miss that FG towards the end of the game. He ran on t9 the field late and never got set.
9. I started off watching the game on the UConn+ app. It hurt me to watch the cameras and lack of focus and video quality. End of first quarter I switched to the Fox feed off of Roku TV and it was much better.
10. Evers looked and played better than last year. That being said when he had to run I kept thinking he is one hit from another concussion.
11. McDonald has some good looking arms.
12. Bring on 'cuse.

The UConn+ feed was awful. It was like watching football back in the 60's. I hope they figure it out.

I saw part of Syracuse Tennessee game. Syracuse has a MASSIVE offensive line. It’s not going your way be easy next week.
After Syracuse got down 17 points in the first quarter, they played Tennessee even over the next three quarters. They’re likely better than the final score indicated.

Everyone on this board knows I'm a big JF guy, but we need to accept that he is an average FBS quarterback. And that's great for us. But he is going to miss reads and miss guys. He's going to have too much zip when he should have touch and he's going to have too much touch when he should have zip.

Based on the purgatory we've been through, his competence feels like Vince Young. But he's just Joe.

The band was fun yesterday facing the student section from the end zone. Took awhile but they finally got most of them to put down their phones and appreciate the funk being delivered.

Parking at the Rent sucks. It's a victim of the lack of mass transit in greater Hartford. And one of the reasons people leave early is because they want to beat the traffic.

If UConn wants butts in seats for four quarters it needs to find a way to get people to the stadium so that they worry less about how they're going to get back out.
I don't know why PAWS stopped allowing people out of the South exit of the property, but it would help a heck of a lot. Getting people on to Route 2 directly would handle most of the cars heading south or east, and would probably increase chances for local businesses to capitalize on the fans...

Crazy speculation, gridiron performance for about a decade resulted in fewer fans, fewer vehicles, and decreased need for extra egress, LAZ parking staff, costs, etc.

I agree with your take but I think we have turned the page and I am ready to set a higher standard. JF did some nice things too. The backups made plays. I am happy overall but there can be improvement.

Ehhh…. This post you might have kept in your back pocket for a couple of weeks.

We racked up nearly 700 yards of offense and some players won nationwide recognition for play yesterday.

JF did miss some throws… or did receiver cut left when they should have cut right?

Lots of new receivers out there.

You may end up being right but not yet IMO

18 for 25, 260 yards, 3 touchdowns, no interceptions, 85 QBR, all in three quarters. Not sure where the improvement will be.

Honest assessment. He did not lead a couple guys that could have been TDs that were inaccurate. Was behind the receiver on a multiple throws including a badly underthrown ball that definitely ahould have been picked and could have been a pick 6 on a deep crossing partern. Area for most improvent though was the number of wide open receivers he never saw and thre elsewhere. Entire team can improve a lot and its nice to critique a 59-13 beat down instead of a close win or god forbid an awful loss.

but this was his first game and he had four touchdown passes. I just questioned the amount of criticism he's getting when we should be focused on the real test which comes next week. I for one thought Joe did just fine and he did miss some throws, but I also like the fact that he bounced back!

Fagnano isn't sexy, but at the end of the day he gets the job done. Isn't that what matters most?
