CCSU Post Game Thread

This will be the only game at the Rent that I’ll be able to go to in person this year. Great weather, great atmosphere, great win.

8 penalties in the game was not great but most of those came in the first half. Hoping we can do a better job of cleaning things up moving forward.

Overall, good start to the season. We’re on to Syracuse.

1. You can't get to 2-0 if you don't win the first game.
2. Two minutes of WTF followed by 58 minutes of what we expected.
3. Took a couple of series but left side of the line was dominant.
4. Chan went from not being on the two deep earlier this week to starting.
5. Skill players appear to he skillful.
6. Defense working as a unit is a work in progress. Stunts/blitz timing a bit off.
7. Defensive penalties on 3rd down in which there was a stop has to stop.
8. I knew Freeman was gonna miss that FG towards the end of the game. He ran on t9 the field late and never got set.
9. I started off watching the game on the UConn+ app. It hurt me to watch the cameras and lack of focus and video quality. End of first quarter I switched to the Fox feed off of Roku TV and it was much better.
10. Evers looked and played better than last year. That being said when he had to run I kept thinking he is one hit from another concussion.
11. McDonald has some good looking arms.
12. Bring on 'cuse.

Positives:

-OL play. After a shaky first drive, they dominated in the run and pass game against an overmatched opponent. We also seem deep, judging by how well the backups played.

-WR depth. We have several guys who can get open downfield and make plays. Bell is obviously our #1, and we added a bunch of secondary and tertiary players in the portal who should be able to take advantage of the attention he draws.

-Juice. He's a weapon. We have 3 very good tight ends, all with different playstyles.

-Evers. He looked sharp, even on his incompletions. Joe was fine and put up a nice statline, but he did miss some open guys & left some meat on the bone as a result

-Playcalling. We were aggressive on both sides of the ball without showing Syracuse too much.

-Coverage from the back 7. Chadwick got beat once but otherwise we had them locked up. Their QB made some legitimate throws and still couldn't crack a 50% completion rate, despite the lack of pressure. Mills and Parham were terrific portal adds.

Negatives:

-Defensive line. This was our biggest concern coming into the year, against against a CCSU OL with 3 freshman starters, they did nothing to alleviate those concerns. They put very little pressure on their QB and we were not stopping the run well until their (impressive) starting RB got injured. We missed a few tackles in the LB corp, but not an unusual number for the first game of the year. If we fall short of our goals this year, the DL will be the #1 culprit in all likelihood.

-WR perimeter blocking. Porter and Brown were egregiously bad at this, although the latter had a good game otherwise. With the number of short passes we like to run to our talented receivers and tight ends, we have got to block better against good competition to turn 3 yard gains into 8 yard gains.

-Special teams. Missed FG and a bad snap on a punt give this unit a poor grade. I don't think this is an area of concern going forward, however. I'd like to see Harper return kicks over Brown.

I liked the effort. I liked the play at QB - all 3 of them actually.

Good signs?

Joe. F looks like what we saw last year.
Evens - super impressed - sharp, crisp passes and no signs he has any problems coming off the bench.
Running game solid.

Defense got better / bend don’t break will be their mojo this year.

Offense looks dynamic with lots of options out there.

Team overall played “loose” and not a team that looks ready to roll over to anyone.

I am actually just fine having Syracuse early in the season. So we’re still figuring it out? Well they are too and we have a QB that has 7 yrs experience.

All in all, a lot of things for UConn to fix as they will play much better competition. However, it's nice to have optimism after playing a FCS team because UConn blew them out instead of dread because UConn lost to them or barely held on to a win.

Look at the pathetic loss to Holy Cross that finally got Edsall ousted. That Holy Cross team is on par with this year's CCSU team. Or look at 2016's opener where UConn barely beat an FCS Maine team. After that close win, I knew that 2016 UConn wasn't going to be good.

I don't know how this season will go, but Mora and this staff are doing great things for this program. And that Skyler Bell is something else and could have an eye on playing football on Sundays.

Won a game they should win. Elijiah from CCSU had some nice runs until he was injured.

Looks like multiple options at WR with Bell, Murphy, Jackson and others. Tight ends look good as well.

Mel and Cam both had nice runs.

Let’s see what they can do against Cuse.

How was the field condition? I know there were concerns after concert.

Good write up. I observed and noticed the same things.

Won a game they should win
Convincingly. To do otherwise would be a cause for concern. This game check the box and should leave us all thinking "so far so good". I will join those who said Evers looked very impressive. I'm happy for him. Joe looked good, but I'm curious to see how he does against FBS defenders where the windows are more narrow. Add to that that the game had 37,500 in announced attendance. Tough to find much to complain about.

Rough start but can’t complain too much about being a missed FG away from hanging 60 and winning by almost 50

Fagnano and Bell were ready to go and I’m pretty confident Sky will be near the top of many WR stat categories this year (yards, TDs, YAC)

Cam and Mel were running well!

Good sign that Evers looked pretty good in his few drives (couple bad passes) and Tucker launched a 30 yard bomb in his first play

D line was not super inspiring early but let’s see how they rebound next week

Let’s go Huskies!

Not even close. That HC went 10-2 and made the FCS playoffs.

CCSU stinks.
But in previous years this would've been a 13-10 win.
Ok fair enough. I was using CCSU's team from last year as a proxy for this year's team, and this year's team might not be as good. However, CCSU still made the FCS playoffs last year just like Holy Cross's 2021 team even if the 2021 Holy Cross team is better. Holy Cross is still FCS at the end of the day just like CCSU.

But the point stands in relation when talking about UConn Football. UConn teams in past years against FCS teams was far from a sure victory.
