First, does anyone have any updates to report on regarding Caroline's availability for Monday's game vs. Texas?

With this in mind, I "Love" the make-up of this year's team, so far (minus Paige and Ice Brady), because they appear to be more in tuned and much more fluid in their play, as a Team, and not reliant upon just 1 Player, to help bail them out (ie: Paige).

Now some questions to ask? What will Geno's rotation be when Caroline Ducharme returns? With the way that Lou Lopez-Senechal and Aubrey Griffin have looked for the Exhibition Game and especially last night's game, both Lou and Aubrey deserves the minutes on the floor. So with allot of people wanting to see Caroline Ducharme back in the lineup and even starting, at whose minutes does she take?. Starting over Lou Lopez-Senechal? Taking minutes away from Aubrey Griffin? I am not saying that Caroline doesn't deserve significant floor time, but at whose expense?

Lastly (and yes, I know we need to get thru this season first, before talking about next season, but....) after this season, all we lose is Dorka Juhasz and Lou Lopez-Senechal. We get back both Paige and Ice Brady, so that's 10 players returning. Then you add KK, Jana, Qadence, and Ashlynn to the team and now we are looking at 14 Players (and we all know what happened in the beginning of the 2021-2022 season, when we had 14 Players on the team). What are everyone's thoughts on these topics?

In a blowout Azzi, Lou, Edwards, and Dorka don't need to average 30 minutes like they did in this game. Maybe two but not all 4.
Nika and Aubrey don't need to average 25 minutes either.
And with Caroline's injury, she doesn't need to average 30 in blowouts either.
And not everyone will be playing well even in a blowout.
And you still have to manage Azzi''s foot. And she hasn't played a full season in 3 years?
Griffin's back. Don't want to overdo it.
And the two bigs had 57 minutes between them. Don't need that consistently in blowouts.

I would assume drops from all with Nika and Griff getting the most dropoff. OFC Amari and Patterson could get more ((or less on a given game(s)) depending on their level.

Agree?

I know Caroline is excited about finally getting to play. She wants to show that she is a force on this team like last year.If her hip is really healthy this year, I expect great team play from her. I predict she will be AA this year also. This team will have a historic season this year surpassing all of the expectations that has been for or against them. GO HUSKIES!!!

hoophuskie- - -I think Geno wants to see his team under game conditions no matter the opponent!
It's much different than practice time!
This will change as the season goes on.

I’m thinking this roster is of higher quality/ability (playing ability) ) than that one, meaning there is a much better chance that most (if not all) of next years roster will actually see the floor on a consistent basis! It’s difficult for me to think that KK, Ashlynn, and Jana at least, aren’t good enough to warrant some playing time, even on a team as loaded as this one seems likely to be! Quadence may show enough to earn some minutes as well. We’ve all heard Geno say he is willing to play more players as long as they show him they can contribute. I guess we will see next season if they can do that. I think they can.
Think about just how good this team could be next year and especially (if Paige stayed for her Covid year) the year after! I don’t think it is hyperbole to say it would be among the most talented full rosters in the history of women’s basketball! Of course, they would have to stay healthy and play up to expectations but, on paper, it’s hard to think of another team in my lifetime that could match this roster from top to bottom.

If Caroline were healthy from the beginning, I believe she would have started in place of Lou. Now, if she is available Monday, I believe Lou will start as Geno probably will want to bring Caroline back slowly, as in limited minutes. Going forward, it would be hard for Geno to replace Lou based on her play thus far, not only her scoring, but her aggressiveness and the experience she has shown. These two will be interchangeable, with one of them being the fire power we need coming off the bench. No matter, each will be playing the same minutes, depending on how each is playing at the time. To go far, we need both players healthy. We cannot afford to have another player out long term if we want to be a contender. We need Caroline, and as I have said, starting or not, she will have a great influence on how this team performs going forward. I just want her to be back. Go Huskies.

To look even further, because of the extra Covid year it is possible that we will lose no one for the 24-25 season. Whether it is probable or not is anyone’s guess.

We don't have enough info. about Carol's practice history, such as whether she's been able to fully practice without restrictions at all this year after hip surgery, or how long she was limited before fully practicing.

I don't see how she can be a starter anytime soon if she hasn't been fully involved in practices for a period of time.
That would mean that it's not likely that she will be splitting equal time with Lou in tough games. Not before she's fully participating and proves that she's game ready and can meet performance expectations.
I suspect that she'll be coming off the bench for a while and not thrown to the sharks unless others get injured.

Geno needs to be prepared in case Paige is not 100% recovered from reconstructive surgery, if there's complications or others get injured.
Azzi may have foot surgery after this season is over which is another questionable recuperation that can involve complications, even after next season begins.
It's a fact of life that players can become unavailable without notice & every game & practice has injury risks.
He also doesn't know if Paige will leave after next year or not.

Geno has a short window left as a coach.
He's learned how to manage PT when the bench is loaded with talent that's ready to play.
The most talented UConn freshmen get the playing opportunities that they deserve.
Geno will take the heat for the ones that choose to transfer & he can also use the transfer portal too.
He's not going to be bullied for PT by players who aren't performing or don't have the patience to be team players.
Every player should know what's at stake when they choose to play for UConn.
Geno gives enough consideration to let freshmen get reasonable PT, and he may have evolved since the transfer portal began.

Who is Carol and Geno can stay as long as he wants, he has earned it.

Caroline was a starter last season so that is why she can be a starter when she is cleared to play. I believe there are practice videos showing that she has been practicing this season.
Your opinions about Geno

All of next year's newcomers face different scenarios. KK may be the highest rated recruit, but with the toughest path to significant minutes, at least next year. The year after next, she is the presumptive starting point guard (if Paige doesn't come back). Next year she will probably start the season behind Paige and Nika, and ahead of Ines. Could she pass Nika as the season goes on? Sure, but probably not right away.

One advantage KK has is Paige's ability to play SG. We all know who will consume the bulk of next year's SG minutes in Azzi. The backup minutes are more up in the air. Caroline will probably be the starting SF, and Lou will be gone. Ashlynn is the obvious choice if she is ready, but there are other options. Aubrey could play SF and Caroline moves to SG. KK could come in at the point and Paige moves to SG. I suspect Q is a remote possibility as well.

Ashlynn presumably when she plays could be at the point, but given our depth there she is probably needed more at SG, with her next most likely position being SF. Caroline's backup could be the best player between Aubrey, Ashlynn and Q, depending on what trait you want. Aubrey more of a PF that can play SF, and Ashlynn more of a SG that can play SF. Because of her leaping and physical play I think Ashlynn could be good there.

Jana has the easiest path to immediate playing time. I think three players are the main candidates for playing time at C in 23/24. All three are talented but unproven. At least two of the three will get significant time IMO. Ice is not quite ideal C height but has the bulk to bang with opposing C's. She may be more PF than C, but with our stacked talent there, we need her more at C. Both she and Jana appear to be top prospects, Ice has the advantage of some time in the Uconn system, but the disadvantage of coming off an injury. Jana could be a PF as well but like ice is needed more at C.

I expect those two to get the C minutes with Amari being a longshot for the rotation. She could be the first alternative if injuries hit Ice or Janna, but it is not that simple. By next year Ayanna might be too good to limit her to Aaliyah's backup minutes. My guess is Geno would prefer Ayanna at C to Amari at this stage even if it is not her natural position. Amari could potentially change that, but I suspect Amari will be the fourth option for C next year in a two C rotation.

Q might surprise, but on paper would seem to be a backup to the backup in her first year, potentially getting more than mop-up minutes only when injuries hit, which the last two years has certainly reminded us can often occur.

Who knows, but I expect Jana to play quite a bit, and wouldn't be surprised if KK and Ashlynn got some too important minutes too, and don't expect to see too much of Q. Regardless, what Geno will have is a much deeper team, better able to cover for injuries, and with far greater strategic options. With a 7 or 8 player rotation Geno needs to manage substitutions for strategic rest. He is limited in his ability to make situational substitutions, but with more talented spare parts fighting for playing time he can choose to insert players bringing what he needs at the moment, be it shooting, passing, rebounding, defense etc. He will have plenty of tools in his toolbox so to speak.

Good post. It's an interesting question where next year's awesome recruiting class will fit in.

We will probably return Nika Azzi Paige Caroline in the backcourt, and Aaliyah Aubrey Ayanna Ice in the front court. If I were a forecasting sort -- who am I kidding, of course that's exactly who I am! -- I'd guess we'd start:

Nika
Azzi
Paige
and sub Caroline and Aubrey in the back court,

Aaliyah
Ice
and sub in Ayanna and Amari

That's a pretty tight rotation for the new kids to find a place in. You're right that Jana is likely to be competitive with Amari as the sub for Ice at the 5. KK and Ashlyn may only find occasional minutes. And Q is gonna have to really light it up in practice to supplant either Caroline or Aubrey.

The following year, I'd guess we'd start:
KK
Azzi
Caroline
and sub Ashlyn and Q in the back court,

Jana
Ice
Ayanna
and sub Amari in the front court.

I wonder who the new recruits will be who are scrambling for minutes around these guys. Whoever they may turn out to be, I really like the look of the team two years from now!

And three years from now, the team will belong to KK Ashlynn Q Ice and Jana -- one heckuva a strong Junior cohort!

Geno's current contract extension as head coach runs through the 2024-2025 season.
After that, it's possible that, "He and the university can mutually agree to extend the contract by up to two additional one-year periods.....Should Auriemma resign or retire in good standing, Auriemma can take a job in the athletics department for a maximum of five years worth $500,000 ($100,000 more than stipulated in his previous contract). Otherwise, he will receive a payment of $1.5 million, up from $1 million, within 90 days of his departure."
Interesting article in the Courant. I wonder if this means he can't simply sign another contract in '25, or in '27, after the two extensions are over. Is the article suggesting that the university is not permitted to offer him another contract? This seems like it would not be legal. Of course, if the article means he has said he won't seek another contract because he wants to retire, that's a different story. I hadn't heard that he's expressed any such intention.

Still, he is 68 now, and it wouldn't be surprising to hear that he'd like to retire soon. In '27, he'll be 73 when KK Jana Ashlynn and Q graduate. Personally, I think of Geno as ever young.

Pretty sure he missed a golf event due to health reasons. This isn't breaking news.

Unless health issues become a consideration, I believe Geno will want to go out on top.
Maybe wants at least one and maybe 2 NC’s to add to an already remarkable legacy.
Oh, yeah…if Caroline is cleared to play, she will come off the bench for maybe 10-15 minutes depending on her neck.
Lou has been doing everything Geno has expected and maybe a little more.
If it ain’t busted, don’t fix it.
Of course, it’s always possible that Caroline, fully healthy and intent on stepping up her game, will once again become ANOTHER go to guard out on the floor in big situations.
Gee, wouldn’t that be terrible?!

IMO Geno wants to surpass Tara for the most wins.
If he can accomplish that within his contract then he'll probably want to retire.
After Paige & Azzi leave, who knows how highly ranked UConn will be.
It's all a crap shoot after they leave unless UConn can recruit Juste or a similar #1 elite player.
The transfer portal & NIL have really altered the WCBB landscape.
Geno can continue to advise, recruit or scout, be the school ambassador or do whatever he wants after that.
I think that he will want to help someone take over the HC duties as part of his transitional part time job away from coaching to end the stress of the daily grind.
What good is all of the money if you can't enjoy it?

Regarding Caroline, I think this team will need her for 30 minutes a game to be great. As good as this team is offensively we still have little indication that they will be able to score well against top defenses. The last 2 years in a row we got beat by top teams without Page in the lineup. And that was with 3 first round draft picks on the team who are no longer there. I'm more impressed with Lou's defense than I thought I would be and the team's overall defense so far but to be NC material we need Caroline. She can score against top flight competition and another key will be Azzi's ability to create those short jumpers and get to the rim and draw fouls. Opposing teams are going to be all over her to stop those 3 pointers. And Lou will create some offense as well but will it be enough to stop Boston and Stanford again? I don't think so without Caroline getting lots of PT.

Which to me means Nika becomes a 15 minute PT player. I actually would prefer Aubrey to get PT over Nika. And I think Nika is great. This team needs to get out on the break and convert on turnovers. This team needs some team speed. This team needs every player to be able to score. It's just a better team with Caroline, Azzi and Lou on the court. I also think Ayanna is going to be our best rebounder and after she fixes her foul issues she will both defend very well and be a force on the offensive boards which would be absolutely huge for this team. With 3 great perimeter shooters I want those offensive rebounds. Our offensive conversion rate should be outstanding with these options.

Just an opinion, but I have never been privy to a group of people so adept at reading other people’s minds and future plans as some of the posters here. Ironic, the poster here sharing speculation about possible impending Fudd surgery in another Ducharme thread posted that (paraphrasing) talking injuries gives unwanted information for rivals to use, you know, “loose lips sink ships.”
