Hartf0rd and Connecticut lost the Whalers on their own. The NHL doesn't want them to return. But it's not their fault they left.

If the Devils didn't win Stanley Cups, they'd have been moved.

Is it their fault they had three winning seasons in 18 years which might cause attendance problems in many markets outside of the original 6?

This guy sucks:

Constantly rips his own team(the canes) and now defends them:

Malloy letter inside link:

Hey Hartford: Thanks, but no thanks. And please, stop. Enough.
Malloy just made us look really desperate. I agree. Enough. The Whalers are not coming back anytime soon. Trading Ron Francis (and selling to Karmanos) was the fatal harpoon. Houston and Quebec City will get franchises before Hartford. Then a bunch of other cities will pop up.

We have a great college scene we can develop here.

You're crazy. Governor Malloy the only politician to do anything positive for the Hartford hockey season since Ella Grasso raised the Civic Center roof: he is 100% responsible for UConn's men's hockey team joining Hockey East and making Hartford their home. This will help fire up the Hartford hockey crowd and bring another great crowd on Friday vs. BU. God bless the guy.

UConn’s Cavanaugh, USCHO.com’s Weston join Feb. 6 edition of USCHO Live!

Go to 33:40 to listen to the man who is in charge of the program about the future facilities on campus.

Said nice things about the XL Center and likes staying in the hotel rather than the team being on campus during the weekend. Also implied Phase 1 would mean some Freitas upgrades although he wasn't specific. Bottom line it did not seem like he was in a tremendous hurry to build a new facility.

Agree that Malloy's vision was very important to UConn joining HE.

For more than 20 years joining HE had been talked about. Then even after Frietas was built the talk continued, but it never got any political support to make it happen. Then Malloy, Herbst and Manuel came into their respective offices, eager to make things happen and BOOM, it happened almost overnight. Well, it is obvious that Malloy, the BC alum, had certain connections that proved invaluable in knocking over both HE opposition (not much, but some related to the question of "is UConn the BB school really committed?") and state opposition (if you think there wasn't any ask yourself why Gampel doesn't have ice). It also helped greatly that Warde Manuel the Michigan man, was also very favorable. So yes, Malloy, Herbst and Manuel did it jointly. It was a confluence of events and personalities that made it happen after so many years. Even after the Diaco fiasco in FB I refuse to be overly critical of the last two.

Funny thing, hockey operates much differently than other sports. Yale took the long view and championed QU into the ECAC. BC did the same with UConn. In hockey, schools are all about building the sport.

A final bit of irony. UConn had already been in HE for what, almost a decade in women's hockey when the men's team joined? UConn needed the women's rides to offset FB going up to 1A status when they joined the Big East in FB. So joining HE for the men meant not just supporting 18 rides, but finding the resources for 36. And those extra 18 could not be achieved by adding women. That had already been done.

Well for one he put $ into the XL Center to keep it operating..
Fair point. Of course it he didn't it would have sped up the development of the on campus rink.

FWIW, I am on the record here that I enjoy UConn Hockey at the XL Center.

Or UConn would have not joined Hockey East until much later and would have had to start from scratch beginning in 2021 or 2022.

Not so sure of that, since playing in the XL was kind of an after thought. I don't think anyone realized that it would take off as much as it has.

I never said anything else negative about Malloy other than he just made us look desperate for the NHL. Message boards.

Who cares if we look desperate for the NHL. What's the harm in that? It's not harming UConn hockey or anything else.

I would give an NHL franchise the XL if they agreed to move back.

(Of course, I'm pretty sure that no one would take it.)
