From Today's Articles:

Once he gets to 900 - and Cincinnati has lost 12 straight to UConn - he will be only 198 wins away from Pat Summitt. In Geno years, that's between five and six seasons, considering his program has won an average of 35 games over the last 10 seasons. You figure he will stick around for that party. The wine should be very top-shelf.

This got me thinking ( always a dangerous proposition.) There are three active coaches who have more career wins than Geno. So, what are the odds that Geno is the first to break Pat Summitt's record? Yes, Geno is winning at a faster rate than the other three, but is it enough to overtake them? Here are the relevant stats:

North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchel (953 wins), Age 62, currently 18 wins this season.

Rutgers' C. Vivian Stringer (945 wins) Age 66, currently 16 wins this season.

Stanford's Tara VanDerveer (943 wins) Age 61, currently 16 wins this season.

UConn's Geno Auriemma (899 wins) Age 60, currently 20 wins this season.

So, who gets to 1098 first. Will Geno outlast the other three coaches?

Good question. As we know, Sylvia has had health issues. She also looks older than her age. No disrespect intended, CViv looks and seems old, though her team is playing more exciting basketball than they have in a while. Tara seems as if she could do this forever. I think all 5 of them could be between 1,050 and 1,100 at the same time. With Pat, that is a 5-headed Mt. Rushmore.

Making up 54 games on Hatchell in 5 years would be difficult imho.
In contrast, I think Stanford is in a bit of decline and is gonna struggle. I see Geno passing Tara.

I don't know if Geno sticks around that long. He'll be 61 next month I think, not sure what his current contract situation is like, but could see him finish this one out, then do a 2 year transitional type contract where the transition to his successor begins. I assume he's already tossed around a few names, maybe even reached out informally to some people he has in mind.

I can't think of anyone else who comes close. Muffett McGraw, age 59, has 662 wins. Am I missing anyone currently active? AND, it doesn't look like anyone else will ever approach these lofty numbers in the foreseeable future....

Jim Foster, Age 66, has 812 victories. Thanks, I didn't think of him. I don't see him getting to 1000, but that's just a guess.

Good question. I think any of the 3 of them if they get close enough would stick around to break it.

Need average wins per season for each coachand then you could project it out.

Depends on whether Kathy wants him around the house 24/7.

I would doubt Geno has reached out informally to anyone. What would be the point? When he retires, UConn will not lack for applicants.

Btw, I assume it's CD if she's not ready to retire with Geno or Shea. I think the way Hartford has fallen off the last 5 years has really hurt Rizz's chances.

Based on the last five years, you got to wonder if Tara does not end up beating Pat first and end up with the most ALL time. Will be one of the youngest to reach it, and does not seem to have any current plans of stopping.

Very nicely done, Frank.

BTW, came across this little tidbit:

Auriemma was the last of a series of interviews conducted by the search staff. Most of the other candidates were highly qualified coaches, and most were female. One of those included in the interview process was Chris Dailey, who would become Auriemma's assistant and is currently the associate head coach at UConn. Dailey was identified as the candidate likely to receive an offer if Auriemma turned down the offer.[14]

Ahh, the course of history...

Interesting contemplation. All are Hall-of-Fame coaches whose longevity and excellence enabled them to compile incredible numbers. Geno may reach the top of that august roster, or he may not, but the list on which he will likely forever be #1 (and the most important) is National Championships won.

I'd pencil in about 28 per yr next five for TV. That we'd put her neck and neck w Geno. But I actually expect Geno to slightly exceed 36.6 next five yrs (seems crazy I know) so I give Geno a very slight edge. Hat hell has a shot too.

Imagine if Geno spent less time doing odd jobs before going into coaching? I think Pat started coaching at a much younger age than Geno, like 23 or something like that?

I think its unrealistic to think Tara will average 34 wins a year going forward. I can see it dropping down to 28-30 a year as the PAC12 is improving and Stanford will no longer be the dominant team.

I will buy that (Wbbfan1 and Suebird10fan), so I added an adjustment line based on your feedback....becomes VERY interesting five years from now......Could you actually have 4 coaches reach 1000 wins in the same year?

Did Hatchell get credited for the 27 wins that UNC won last year ? If she did, she really shouldnt have.

Stanford loses Orrange, Bonnie S, and Taylor Greenfield. I won't be surprised if they win< 25 next year.

Sounds odd since Hatchell wasn't on the coaching bench at all, but as head of the program she gets full credit for the 27 wins and the run to the Elite 8 last year. With the UNC ethics meltdown, it's always possible some wins get vacated.

Geno missed seven games over the years for various reasons, but still gets credit for the victories.

Well, that's very very different. Obviously coaches can get sick and laid up in bed for a game or forget how many scrimmages they scheduled that the NCAA decided to count as a game so that they earn a brief suspension. That's a temporary blip on a season and the games should all be run in together under one HC.

If a coach subs in for a a whole year and is the one on the bench leading the team, that coach should get the credit for the wins and losses. A more relevant case would be with Jim Calhoun and George Blaney when JC was getting treatments for cancer at various stages. It was never a full season but there were lengthy periods.

To be clear, I agree with you 100%. I don't see why Hatchell gets credit for last year, except for sympathy sake. Although she sat on the bench, Pat Summitt was not 100% her last season either.
