71 % of Miami's freshmen were from out of state.

vs 5% for U of F...

I wonder if Miami's football attendance problems are partially due to that...some students may be more interested in following a team from their home state.

Probably 20 years ago, give or take.
I was local and was part of the pilot program for Project O in 1970-ish. Yeah they got a make-over but not like in Storrs. New Marine Science Bldg. New docks. refirbed the pool and gym and the 300-seat auditorium, demoed the Coast Guard Research Complex, new student center'....cleaner look and more up to date. Tell ya, nothing was more tired than the Storrs campus in the 70s. Had a nephew finish his UConn degree there by taking a sailing class.

Speaking of. Aren't we looking at a population wane? Why are we pushing higher when the bottom will fall out?

I did it a few times as a kid, and loved it. I did it a few times as a kid, and loved it then as an adult I set it up as a trip for Cub Scouts. It's kind of fun to see the reactions of people who aren't familiar with the area.

Good to hear they upgraded a Avery Point and are considering doing more. That could really be a in the UConn system.

Didn't want to bury this in the "alumni" thread as it affects everything about the university including sports especially fooball.

Is it a good idea? The state government thinks so. It would help fill the stadium.

How does this fit with declining college enrollment especially in the Northeast. Where will the students come from? Not to mention the lack of financial support Uconn recieves from the state. Also what happened to the water shortage problem in the Storrs area. Is the state going to build a pipeline from Hartford.

They are adding dorms (actually renting blocks of apartments from local developers) at Stamford. Next step is to build some, tough with land costs, but they have the parcel across the street that had been Bloomingdales parking garage, and add back sports teams. They had a few D3 teams through the early 1980's when the campus was in North Stamford. It's my understanding that an MBA from Stamford is considered superior to one from Storrs, primarily because of the access to corporations in lower Fairfield County and NYC
How is renting blocks of apartments in Stamford not a money loser? A 1b downtown starts around $2400/mo or $28,800/yr. Current on Stamford campus housing is $11K(standard shared)-$14K/year (penthouse shared). No food plans included. I don't get the model, or how UConn is getting places like Harbor Point to work with them.

Also, what D3 teams did the Stamford Branch have? I was on the baseball team in '75-'76 and we pretty much only played other branches, CW Post and Norwalk CC. Helped start a hockey club in '76, but I thought that died (we were awful). I don't recall anything other than baseball in '93 when I was going for MBA classes.

Yes, for branch students in a dorm. Obviously, not for current live-at-home branch students (a la historical branch students).

Highly doubt UConn’s branches ever become big enough to operate as separate entities a la umess or unc systems with massively longer term other schools in the Bay State, e.g., Lowell Tech and SMU (Dartmouth) under the shared umess moniker.
Demographic trends say Stamford might have a small shot in 30 years, but I doubt any of them because individual entities.

Some leasing info from this summer:

-> In total, the number of beds available has increased from 480 to 650, Enright said.

The largest lease is at Allure Harbor Point at 850 Pacific Street, where ythe university will spend $1.04 million for 21 units to house 50 students. The following year, that total will increase to $1.07 million. The university will have the option to extend the lease for an additional year, at a cost of $1.1 million.

A similar deal was executed for 19 units at NV Harbor Point at 100 Commons Park North to house 45 students. The price tag will be $945,000 the first year and $973,350 the following year. If the university extends the lease one extra year, the cost will rise to about $1 million.

A smaller deal, which is set to go before the city's Zoning Board on Monday, would add 35 beds for the school's use at 1385 Washington Boulevard at an annual price of $484,000 for two years. <-

Lots of schools with aau membership have 35000 + enrollment. It's based on academic research investment.
The problem is that a new dorm costs about $200M based on recent experience. That takes money away from other things.

So they're spending an average of almost $21K per student, thus losing between $7K-$10K per student housed per year.

The State ran a pipe from Shenipsit Reservoir to campus about 5 years ago and UConn water is now managed by Connecticut Water Co. There is plenty of water. I think some legislators heard from parents whose kids did not get into UConn and that is why they want an increase in enrollment. There is a new dorm complex opening up above Mirror lake in south campus this year. There is also a new dorm complex planned for the south side of the Rt 195 and South Eagleville Rd intersection. The old buildings are already demolished and gone.

#2, I think we've discussed. Doc Mazza RIP was the best HS teacher I ever had. And my boss at the Long Ridge Club

It’s far less that out of state students don’t care about football while they’re there, and far more about the students not being within easy distance to go to games once they graduate and leave an area they had no prior ties to

UConn BOT was at Avery Point this June with building dorms on its campus discussed.
Dorms on Avery Point would be awesome. Oceanfront living at in-state tuition prices would be a super fun way to spend college years.

I teach high school seniors and we are seeing this phenomenon as well.
Yep. I teach at a small, private middle school where our kids end up with pretty impressive college matriculations. That being said, our not as strong kids who live in CT have been caught in the "I could always go to UConn" trap and then realize they can't get in and end up settling for expensive, but underwhelming private schools and out-of-state publics. UConn isn't a typical destination for our graduates, but our one full ride scholarship kid is starting at UConn now.

Que ipso loquitor. (And if I didn’t get the Latin exactly right give me a break — I’m Jewish.)
My Latin may be a little rusty, but does that translate to "I don't know, I just guessed."

(Actually, I think what you wrote translates to "what speaks for itself" which would be the answer to the Jeopardy question "Res" in ancient Rome.)

Iirc Hartford campus is only 1500-1700 students. Should get that to 3k, and make it mostly upper classmen who can better take advantage of living in a city
website says 3600+...which makes it more than half and closer to the size of Xavier, Providence and Butler ;)
