Heather definitely bared her fangs a bit against GT. When she entered the game, there was some bumping/grabbing/ and obstruction by the GT player covering her as Heather tried to get down the court after UConn got possession. Heather didn't take it kindly, and returned it. That's how the 3-second call developed, too. Both post players were on the deck, and there was some grabbing & pushing. Heather did not back down, and gave as good as she got.

Being a "finesse" team does not have to mean standing there and passively taking whatever beatings the other team decides to hand out to you. The Red Auerbach Celts were always finesse teams, but Red always had a couple of enforcers on the squad that could give back if the other team tried beating the Celts up. For this year's Huskies, Heather probably is the closest thing available to an enforcer, except that's not really in her personality. After all, she's going into nursing, not law enforcement.

Nurses can be very tough enforcers when it is for the good of the patient.

That was textbook flagrant; "a flagrant foul is a serious personal foul. A foul is considered flagrant when it involves excessive or violent contact which could injure the fouled player."

Crawford, her coach and the entire Hoya team were frustrated and angry by the embarrassing beatdown they were receiving and she had nothing but very bad intentions on the play. She used both excessive and violent contact which could have easily injured Bria, since she outweighs Bria by 100lbs and caught her in an awkward and defenseless position. Thank God bria is built like Gumby! Doesn't matter if it was intentional (which it clearly was) or unintentional. Crawford should have received a flagrant technical and ejection.

NCAA and NFHS basketball rules

NCAA (college) and NFHS (U.S. high school) rules define a flagrant foul as a personal or technical foul that is extreme or severe.

• A flagrant personal foul (or intentional foul) involves excessive or severe contact during a live ball.
• A flagrant technical foul involves unsportsmanlike conduct that is extreme in nature, or excessive or severe contact during a dead ball. Fighting is also considered a flagrant technical foul.

The penalty for a flagrant technical foul in NCAA and NFHS rules is immediate ejection of the offending player, plus two free throws and a throw-in for the opposing team. The ejected player is also suspended during the next game played by his or her team.

• For a flagrant personal foul (or intentional foul), the throw-in spot is at the out-of-bounds spot nearest the foul.
• For a flagrant technical foul, the throw-in spot is at the division line opposite the scorer's table.

Flagrant 1 personal foul.


A flagrant 1 personal foul shall be a personal foul that is deemed excessive in nature and/or unnecessary, but not based solely on the severity of the act. Examples include, but are not limited to:
1. Causing excessive contact with an opponent while playing the ball;

2. Contact that is not a legitimate attempt to play the ball or player, specifically designed to stop or keep the clock from starting;
3. Pushing or holding a player from behind to prevent a score;

4. Fouling a player clearly away from the ball who is not directly involved with the play, specifically designed to stop or keep the clock from starting; and
5. Contact with a player making a throw-in.
