The NCAA can't afford to lose California. Combine all of those states and it's 25% of the population.

I don't see any way that the NCAA could seriously entertain the idea of banning all of the California schools.

It would be devastating to the Pac-12 and that alone will probably be enough to make it a non-starter.

Also, why would University Presidents ultimately want to punish California schools for complying with the law of their state? Does the University President of Duke really want to screw over Stanford like that? And Berkeley and USC and UCLA? And Pepperdine, Fresno, Irvine, etc? I have a hard time seeing that, because they could easily be in the same situation.

So my prediction is the NCAA will either prevail in a legal challenge or make a deal.

I'm puzzled that you seem to think that a legislature would or should not have the authority to pass laws that conflict with the rules of a business association.

Because I believe the NCAA to be a private club (association) and therefore exempt from public laws. That is what the Constitutional Challenge will be.

Just so you know where I stand on the issue, I believe all college athletes should be paid the same regardless of sport. Same for Olympic Athletes.

I agree with that, as far as being paid by the school, but how about endorsements, memorabilia, etc?

Actually it does. Just google it. I will admit that most of the cases that come up are discrimination and ADA ones. This will be an unusual case.

I agree with that, as far as being paid by the school, but how about endorsements, memorabilia, etc?

I think there are 2 options for "other income".

1. The money goes into the school's student income fund to be shared by all at that school. Reason being, if you weren't playing for the school there wouldn't be any "other income". This is the .0000001% socialist in me.

2. Escrow the money and pay it out when the student/athlete graduates. Give them 6-8 years to graduate. This would allow the players that leave early time to get their degree. Most degrees can be completed online, so it really shouldn't be an issue. This would be an incentive for getting their degree if the pros didn't work out or an injury.

Like almost everything in our society nowadays, you are not going to please everyone regardless of what comes of it. It will be interesting to watch what happens over the next 3 years.
