A family member of mine had a similar situation to this, with a spinal stenosis. I don't know the severity of Calhoun's, and on what vertebrae it is, but mine elected to go with surgery, which did require a prolonged period of bed rest, a few weeks, wearing of a brace for a while after that. That was related to a specific trauma that occurred, so I don't know if the two injuries are comparable. Back issues are very tricky, and can linger for long periods of time. There's also some good research out there that general stress does lead to an increased perception of back pain, mainly due to how central the lower back is to your body's mobility, and the stress of not having that mobility.
