FROM DOM:

STORRS (February 3, 2010) — University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun will take an indefinite medical leave of absence, effective immediately, to deal with worsening spinal stenosis, a lower back condition that causes him severe pain and hampers mobility.

“Jim has been able to manage it with the physical therapy and stretching, but over the last several days, things have become worse and he is not able to deal with this on a day to day basis, so other options need to be considered. Right now, he is physically unable to coach.”

I guess this can explain is lack of movement on the bench the past couple games. Hope all is well and that he can return soon.

I'm not usually one to be negative, but with this news there really are some eerie similarities to the 2009-2010 season.

That being said, I wish Coach Calhoun a speedy recovery.

Damn, one or two unresponsive, non-listening children will stress you out and sometimes even make you sicker! And he's got 10 of them.

Get well coach.

The stress cannot be helping this condition. This explains way he has been sitting for much of the game. Standing can make it more painful. I know it ain't gonna happen but I would like to see KO handle the coaching duties.

This also bodes poorly for JC's leisure time with his great love - golf. Not good for retirement either. I guess rest and exercise are the keys?? Maybe back surgery?

My father dealt with the same thing, Spinal Stenosis, the narrowing of the spine pinching a nerve. He had to have multiple disks removed and was out of work for 9 months....

That's a tough one. I'm not sure surgery would fix that .

So that may be part of the reason(s) why he hasn't been stomping around the sidelines as of late.

Get well soon & feel better Coach.

Everything always comes back to one's health, which trumps everything.

Hope Coach C is not in too much pain and gets well!

Win one for the Gipper.

No positive spins on this. Kinda of reminds me of a few other coaches down the stretch. Iwas hoping Jim would make it through the Pitt and SU exit and then bow out. Prognosis for his age at this point is usually surgery and up to one year of rehab or restricted activity

this team's play has driven him sick. Maybe they will play harder and hopefully win these next 2 games for him. If we can't beat a reeling Seton Hall team at home than we dont deserve to make the NCAA tournament.

Damn, by a lot of accounts, this could be a long-term issue. UGHHHH.

Now we have a leaderless and coachless team... lets see who steps up.
