When UConn and Cincinnati went into their fourth overtime period in Friday’s quarterfinal game of the AAC tournament, it immediately drew comparisons to another classic conference tournament game: The Syracuse-UConn six-overtime game in the 2009 Big East tournament.
This time though, Jim Calhoun was watching from the ESPN studio instead of sweating it out on the bench.
“When you’re watching … it’s always, I know it seems funny, but it’s harder because what you’re doing is you say ‘hey Johnny grab the rebound or get back on defense’ whatever the case may be,” he said. “During the game (on the bench except) for substitutions, a little verbal motivation for kids at least I felt somewhat controlled. And when a game gets like that, and the game did and it happened for the six overtime game … the game just started to flow.”
