C7 to get BE Name

You have love some of the arguments from visiting St John's and PC fans. What they did in the very distant past is significant, even if 45 years ago. UConn's success in the recent past, however, will not carry over into success in the future. Why? Because we are not affiliated any longer with the teams that won 45 years ago.

Good grief people. The guy posted some interesting and relevant news on a topic we've been discussing. He didn't attack UConn in any way or say anything negative. Let's have some class, unless you want the same rep as the Syracuse board. I think this outcome is the right one for UConn and for the C7.

the C7 should have the name over a conference that includes Houston, SDState and Tulane, no question. Technically the name does have some value so I hope we get compensated and keep our NCAA credits but I'd rather the Big East go back to being a northeast market basketball conference than whatever it's going to become otherwise. It was a great conference for us and I wish it the best. It really sucks that last year's Big East Tournament has retroactively become the last I give a crap about. It used to be a really fun day trip in and maybe it still will be but it won't compare to what it used to be.

I say the name is ours as the last member standing and we should shove it in a drawer. Let the C7 make their own way instead of trading on the accomplishments of the FB schools they detested so much.

It's business.

I think because you can't petition until after it indeed does happen, then I think the assurances part he referenced is what they would need to pull the trigger on this.

Anyway the FB schools need a new clean identity and the C7 honestly deserve the name, so this works out well.

The programs that did the least for the BE (except assure its destruction) deserve the name?

Yeah, that Seton Hall, DePaul, PC battles were epic. It's not like UCONN, SU, Pitt, UofL, ND ever did anything.

Vuce,

You started it. And yes we have sucked for the better part of the last 10+ years with even only a modicum of success in the BE before that.

We need a fresh start and we are apparently getting one. Also getting a fresh new practice facility for men's hoops, just like you guys.

It probably wont be just like ours... I mean it'll probably have basketballs and stuff like that... but it'll lack a few national titles... the prescence of former NBA lottery picks working out there in the summer... and Hall of Fame coaches... but hey Foxwoods seems to have a lot of Ernie DiGregorio memorabilia you guys could have. ;)

Was going to say, really like Leaman and what he's doing down there. Just don't act like you won Hockey East & send out a celebratory email after you tie BC.

*sorry, continue flamefes*

I'll say this, if and when UConn ever beats BU they are more than welcome to send out such e-mails. But they are basically a D-III program, unlike PC.

The bottom half of the conference (except G-town and Nova) is leaving.

No UConn, Cuse, Louisville, WVU, Pitt, or Cincy. The Big East name is no longer worth anything. MSG will certainly be able to get out of any contract based on what happened to the conference. The NCAA credits should be distributed to those who earned them. But PC is used to getting that which it hasn't earned just by being in a conference with UConn and the rest of the aformentioned schools, so I'm sure this entitled piss ant will whine about that.

Your post contradicts itself, shove it in a drawer because your pissed is emotional, not business.

Nothing emotional about it. A lot of equity built up in the BE brand is due to UConn. Why allow a would be competitor to use it? The fact that the C7 wants it so badly tells you it has value.

I think they should have to use an *

LIke:

Big East *but not the good ones

I get that there is some bitterness, and all the crap talking back and forth is expected but if we are all the dregs why are people upset that we are leaving?

Upon further reflection, we simply paint the B1G logo on the basketball court. Then we get one of those really large decals of an exclamation point and apply it over the "1". Then when the invite comes we simply peel off the decal and voilà.

now your understanding me:eek:

Who is upset that you're leaving?

People are upset that you leeched off the successful schools, ruined the conference with a bball centric focus, then decided to leave.

You didn't leave soon enough, that's why everyone is pissed. Had you left 7 years ago, we would have thrown you a parade.

Personally I'm not all that upset. I think it's the way things were looking the second Cuse and Pitt walked. I think the way it's happening sucks. I'm not sure it could happen any other way. Some of the comments from the ADs and Presidents of the C7 certainly haven't made it easy to maintain civil discourse. A lot of it feels like piling on. The other thing that's a bit crazy is the future of the C7 isn't really in doubt. They've basically got a fairly soft landing place no matter which way the wind blows... We've got a hell of a lot invested in it. The stakes are quite frankly higher than they are for C7. It's just the way it is. Especially after being associated with UConn has benefited the C7 financially.

Not everyone is. I think the C7 are doing the right thing. The Big East name is better used by 5 original members vs 1 original member and I like the idea of it living on as a basketball league as intended. Plus it has zero to negative value as a football brand. But still I think there should be compensation for the name.

I also remember a time when UConn was the doormat of the Big East and St. Johns and PC were not. I even remember Seton Hall being great under PJ.

I have said this many many times, but the whole situation just sucks, it sucks for UConn and it sucks for NE basketball. We will now have the 3 main NE schools all in different conferences. I'm not even sure who will be a rival now for PC or UConn for that matter.

The greatest BB conference and tournament in the world destroyed over greed and the chase for the almighty $.

It will just be odd because we still have all the BE championship banners hanging in Gampel. Not an issue for the majority of the C7.

I think the fact that there still is one year of the BCS, NCAA payouts, and an NCAA auto-bid tied into this hasn't made this all that easy too. The talk of 'disolving' the conference certainly would have a very negative impact on the bottom line for football schools and that's what was originally reported.

We aren't upset that PC is leaving. ND, SU, Pitt, WVU, UofL & Rutgers? Yes. Very upset.

PC could have left 6 years ago and we probably wouldn't have noticed for a year or so.

No one here, and I do mean no one is upset about PC or the rest of the C7 leaving. We are upset that we are staying.

Five years ago we'd be downright giddy about the C7 leaving. We had party horns and a banner ready to go.

FriarJ, the CR forum is composed primarily of either football only or football first posters. There are relatively few bb first posters here. I'm a UConn alum and a fan of both sports. Part of me is deeply saddened by the loss of all the BE schools that have played together over the years including the C7. As UConn elevated its presence under JC, the bb fans steadily watched as UConn rose towards the top in BE regular season and tournament championships. And those accomplishments were not trivial because the BE was the premier bb conference.

But UConn also invested heavily in upgrading it football presence. The incubation period was not long enough in the BE for UConn football and its fans to establish the ties to the BE. Furthermore there was always the perception, and indeed there is some basis to this assumption, that the schools with both sports were either being hamstrung by the bb only schools or the two sport schools were carrying the bb schools. This came from the way contracts were written with football schools getting more monies from ESPN than bb schools.

Personally I don't subscribe to this philosophy completely, but there were administrators in these schools who did and that is why teams left. In other words it became a self fulfilling prophecy. Because of my sentimentality to the bb side of the equation I would love to have UConn keep the BE name. But the reality is the C7 will get the name in the end. They'll just be required to pay for it.

Makes total sense, thanks for the reasoned response.
