Mechelle Voepel wrote a nice piece on Stringer that includes some fun info on the early days at Cheyney State:

Stringer's run to 1,000 started at Cheyney

It was 46 years ago, so Antoinette Burton didn't think she would recall very much. But once she started talking, her memory fired up.
"We had these ugly uniforms," Burton said, laughing. "They had vertical blue and white stripes. Ugh, I'll never forget those."
Burton was on the first team that C. Vivian Stringer coached at Cheyney University (then known as Cheyney State), about 22 miles west of Philadelphia, in 1972-73. That was where the legendary basketball coach launched her career, at the country's oldest historically black college, which was founded in 1837.

Wasn't she on the verge for like the last 5 years? Geno did it awfully fast... didn't he......

Dating myself, but my first sale after joining a new firm out of college was to Cheyney. Was wandering around trying to find the Purchasing Office and met VS who gave me directions and talked basketball for a few minutes. Have followed her career since.
Always have wondered how good she truly was. Consistently won at schools without the best programs and facilities and did so over a long timeframe. Never was able to create anything near the same level of success as Geno and a few others. Likely not one of the all time greats but has to receive kudos for her accomplishments.

Depends on what you mean by "on the verge." Five years ago she was barely at 900:

C. Vivian Stringer wins 900th as Rutgers tops USF
CVS won her 900th game during the 12-13 BB season and will get #1,000 in the 18-19 season. While Geno won his 900th in the 14-15 BB season and got his 1,000th in the 17-18 season. Basically it took CVS twice the time that it took Geno to go from 900 to 1,000, and she did not have a schedule as tough as Geno.

A couple of years ago it was predicted and fervently hoped for by CVS fans that she'd get her 1000 and pack it up. I don't think so. She'll linger 'til an AD has stones.

She got win #900 on Feb. 26, 2013. At that time her record was 900-330. With her record now at 999-402, this means it will have taken her 172 games to go from 900 to 1,000 if Rutgers can beat Central Connecticut tomorrow.

Geno was 900-234 (correction: 900-134) when he hit 900 on Feb. 3, 2015. (That was Gabby and Kia's freshman year!) He would then proceed to go a mind-blowing 100-1 to hit 1,000 on Dec. 19, 2017.

172 isn't nearly double 101, but no denying that Geno's pace at racking up wins has been truly staggering.

But aside from the anomalous 2016-17 season in which Rutgers went 6-24, Stringer's record the last five seasons has been respectable (28-9, 23-10, 19-15, 20-12) if not up to the standard she set in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Was thinking she had racked up about one victory per year. But that's probably bec it feels to me like she has been coaching for about a thousand years at this point

Like last year, another make or break season if she is going to stay. Last year, she had to rebound from that truly awful 6-24 season, which RU did, winning 20. I suspect this season she needs "in conference" success and an NCAA bid to be considered successful. Recruiting is up (big time) from what it was, and much is expected.

Her contract is stacked in RU's favor, so I think she will only linger past 1000 as long as she is being successful.

Correction, Geno only had “134” losses when he won his 900th game and only has 136 losses now!

This is from the end of last season. It give the top 10 win total of college WBB coaches.

Big events are CViv to 900, Muffet to 900, and whether Geno can catch Tara.

Nice to see the shots of her family. I didn't know she had a special needs daughter.

Great interview with Dawn Staley at halftime — and kudos to Dawn for making the trip to Piscataway for this landmark occasion.

Wow that was cool. As part of the postgame celebration they had recorded video messages from Hatchell, Vanderveer, Geno, and Coach K.

Looking forward to watching the tape. I was at the Arizona game and then had to work, just glancing at the message boards before bed.

Many simply don't realize the icon that Vivian is. She was a trailblazer and a model at overcoming adversity. We always found she was very well respected within the game. And as I always said, no matter what anyone might think, she always spoke very highly of Geno at fan club meetings and other Rutgers events. Doesn't mean she didn't get quite mad at him from time to time, and doesn't mean she didn't want to beat UConn every time we played, but it wasn't personal.
