If CViv wanted to win championships, she should have taught her national runner-up team some offense.

How the he!! did they get into the Big 10??

I don't care for CVS, but I do respect her for speaking up. 'Course, she waited until after she got a new contract, and after she made the NCAA tourney (and before her first tournament game, which might be her last of this tourney - certainly no better than second to last  )

Because they own the coveted New York media, supposedly.

Hopefully Big Ten money will allow them to improve their facilities. With a small football stadium it's hard to compete since that's where most of the AD revenue comes from at most schools.

Did the conference geniuses look at MSG attendance when the Huskies play there? If they added UConn, they REALLY could lock up NYC as their market. And the Maryland women would be playing for 2nd place.

If not mistaken they get big $$$$ 5 yrs from now!!!
I think you're right. Rutgers is "running lean" for the next few years, but, down the road, they'll have the resources to do some good things for themselves. But, I think CViv realizes that she won't be around that long, so...

Basketball of any kind means nothing in conference realignment decisions. It's only about football because that's where all the money is made.

That said, UCONN is the other piece of the NYC media market, which includes Fairfield County. For football, Penn State, Syracuse, Rutgers and UCONN share it, probably in that order. The overall problem is NYC is not a major college FB market. It doesn't have that many college sports fans that ID themselves with football. As an example, Atlanta, GA, a much smaller metro area, has about the same number of folks that ID themselves as college football fans as the entire NYC metro media market.

I think the B1G added Rutgers so that they can sell the Big Ten Network to cable providers in Metro NYC. Your more likely future home would be the ACC so that they can get a foothold in the ti-state area, too.

I'm not sure it was "sell" - what they can do is charge a higher rate for it when there is a school in the market. I think most of the providers carried the BTN and don't have any delusions about Rutgers' TV watching fans, there probably are not a huge number of them. Whereas there are plenty of Penn State and Michigan and other serious football fan Big Ten grads in the NY area.

Rutgers is my 2nd favorite school so I may have been a little biased in overstating their influence.

Rutgers does deliver a sizeable college FB audience in northern NJ, but the interactive college FB map the NY Times published last fall indicates that you can draw a line roughly through the middle of the state and the south half is all Penn State country. A lot more cable subscribers live north of that line because a lot of south Jersey is rural, but it was pretty interesting that Rutgers isn't the biggest draw south of that line, which includes all of metro Philadelphia east of the Delaware River.

When I was growing up in Central Jersey, most people were Penn State fans. Back then, though, Rutgers didn't play a high D-1 schedule in football, so most of their fans were alumni. Habits take a generation or two to change. Now that Rutgers has been in major conferences for the last 20 years I'd expect that more people are growing up Rutgers fans, which will improve their base in the coming years, especially if they can keep winning. There is a ton of high school football talent in NJ - they just need to keep them home. Same in MBB and WBB.

As someone who left NJ 4 years ago, there has been a change in central and northern NJ for sure. Much more RU signage in businesses, folks wearing RU gear, etc.

As to South Jersey - they are considered a little "different". And they tend to self identify with Philadelphia, although why that should equate with Penn State is a mystery to me.

I'm from the north shore in Jersey. I'm also a USC fan since I have two first cousins who are Gamecocks, and a couple of their kids are traitors who graduated from Clemson. Rutgers was my mother's school, so I support them as well. We have a lot in common.

If you follow CFB as I have since Frank Burns and John Batemen were the coaches you'd realize just how far SU has dropped off the FB radar in Jersey. UConn might be closing in on SU for FB popularity there but RU has come a long way since Schiano started giving every newborn in NJ a mini RU football and T-shirt since "04"...It irked the heck out of Doug Marrone who couldnt believe the difference in perception which became reality destroying SU's recruiting juice in NJ...RU went from playing in front of 25G to a 55G stadium built to expand another 12G quickly when necessary. Everyone behind the scenes knows RU had NO interest in moving to the ACC but it was B1G or bust and had been working towards that goal for 20+ yrs along with PSU and pre scandal Jopa...SU FB is done as an eastern power even in perception. When UConn gets into the B1G katy bar the door for the privates(SU/BC) in the NE.

Likewise, my sister-in-law graduated from UCONN so I follow you guys with more than a passing interest. Clemson, though, I wouldn't pull for them if they were playing the Russians or invaders from planet 9.
