In my opinion, BYU could still join the BE as scheduling as an independent will become problematic and BYU's leadership know this. The media rights are a problem, thou. Why? BYU has a LT TV contract with ESPN. It appears that the next move for the BE is to leave ESPN and move to NBC/Versus and BYU wanting to keep their home media rights with ESPN makes BYU less attractive as a conference member. ESPN can solve this problem by signing a contract with the proposed BE at a significant increase. Remember, the Big East can't negotiate with ESPN competitors yet, so it would be hard to show BYU the upside in joining the BE. If ESPN re-ups the BE at a significant increase, BYU would probably OK with this and then they would join the BE.
BYU demanding they keep their home football media rights was a non-starter for the Big East as it should be. BYU did not turn down the BE, the BE said no to BYU's demands.
