Butler Post Game Thread

by “literally” you open that up to the whole roster. Take it with a grain of salt - Ross vs Top 20 teams is one thing but Butler is likely not even dancing so maybe a statistically relevant sample size of quality opponents is needed.

Didn't come right out, played a few minutes afterward, but did sit for a while later. My guess is not concussed, but we'll wait for a real doctor.

Took a nasty fall 25 total minutes played and while not as rough as the concussoon fall in Maui he was taken out.

Less sure he is injured like JStew but something to monitor.

Do this for any player with significant room to grow. Last year I harped on Solo becoming a better driver and getting better shots outside of 3s. He’s done that and there’s not much to talk about with making or missing shots. He can become a better playmaker or passer, but it plays into discussions I do not care to have anymore with him being a junior at this point.

If Ross did what he’s suppose to there’d be nothing to talk about. Everyone else is doing what they’re suppose to do or in the progress of figuring things out.

You support Ross but when he has a plus game vs Butler (whom I think is going to be a mid team) you pick a play or two to hit back.
Then you cherry pick two offensive minded bench players in Furphy and Koroma to want him to move like but Millender, Uros don’t fit the mold and “literally” is the most misused word of the decade.

Would even add your personal assaults are not cool man - try yo be civil and let us all have differences of opinion - this is not a reddit board.

SJ saw it. Was a weird one - fell backwards and head snapped pretty hard against the floor. AK may want to work those front neck muscles a bit. It didn't seem like a situation where the head should have snapped that hard back, but it did - back of the head really whacked the floor. I'm surprised they left him in.

Yeah I watched him smash his head and he should've been taken out to be looked at but he wasn't taken out of the game.

Because I want him to be able to consistently play well and he didn’t show anything in this game to be able to do that outside of a 20 point blowout against Butler.

He didn’t put the ball on the floor for any of his points. So unless teams are going to give him run outs on fast breaks or open 3s, it’s not sustainable. He's still moving in ways that show he still has some ways to go confidence wise, an issue nobody else on this team has which makes it even more frustrating. The big positive that I hope is sustainable is he did a great job of tracking down rebounds.

If I was just rooting for him to have good games for the purpose of being right, yeah I’d be happy about today. But that’s not the point.

Millender and Uros are also not afraid of the ball actually.

Only attack the same clique of posters who routinely disagree with posts just because I say them despite being proven wrong over and over. At some point just shut up and listen.

It’s especially annoying when the discussion is about how a player can become better like this one.

I love how Demary slaps his defender's hand away when he's being guarded with hands on him. I've noticed this before. It looks like he's swatting away flies. Do refs ever call that a foul or is that allowed?

My biggest takeaway from the game is that we played a C- game (with some A minutes and some F minutes) against a team that may finish in the top third of the conference and blew them out of the water.

There will be plenty of tape to work on mistakes/lapses/issues in practice as we move on.

If this team ever hits it A game for a sustained period we may be able to take care of anyone in our path, even Michigan.

because the goal every year is to win a chip. Landrew and hopefully Pierce or another transfer PF are the replacements for Mullins and AK.

I agree with the goal, but I also have faith that in the absence of guys being ahead of them in the pecking order, Stewart and Ross could make their best games so far this season their standards for next season. I’ve gathered many here don’t believe they have that potential, but I do. And if they played up to that standard, they’d be pulling their weight towards championship contention. Again, I’m a self-proclaimed optimist about our guys, so dismiss my optimism if you will, but that’s part of why being a fan is fun for me.

I could hear his noggin hit the floor all the way up in Row N of Section 215. The replay looked horrible. I can't believe he stayed in the game.

This is an absolutely crazy post.

He's been getting more and more confident and doing more and more positive things just about every game. He's already shown this season in previous games that he can:

• Dribble-drive into the lane for a foul line jumper
• Drive to the lane after a pump-fake behind 3pt line, drawing contact and getting to the line
• Drive through the lane on the baseline and dish an assist
• Grab a steal, run out with a controlled dribble and offer up a highlight dunk
• Serve as a pseudo point-guard, bringing the ball up the court to set up a halfcourt offensive set

Last night vs. Butler, he

• Dribble-drove and dished a great assist to Tarris. Shooting it instead of passing would have been a horrible decision
• Had a season highlight rebound dunk-putback
• Had 2 highlight fastbreak alley-oops
• Had 3 quality looks from 3, sinking one
• Rebounded with aggression
• Had 1 steal, and at least 5 plays where he tipped a pass, disrupted the offensive player enough that they dribbled the ball out of bounds
• Locked down pretty much everyone he defended
• Only got 2 fouls

The kid is progressing just fine, looks confident as hell. I don't expect nor do I want him to start, but he's getting more and more consistent about being a net positive for 15-25min/game against all levels of competition.

First two instances he made unnecessary cuts away from the ball that actually put the ballhandler in a bad situation instead of making himself available.

Especially in the second one, the read on these back cuts is if a defender is overplaying you to the point they step above the 3 point line. Defender wasn’t anywhere close before he ran away from the ball and left Malachi in a bad spot. I don’t blame players for not looking for him when he’s slightly open because he doesn’t show he wants the ball most times.

Even when he does gets it he’s immediately giving it up like it’s a hot potato. 35:40 he got the offensive rebound with a chance to go up at the rim and dribbled it out. Anyone else on the team puts its right back up.

He played a great game. But again, mostly as a play finisher in the right place at the right time offensively. Not because he made progress on being naturally aggressive like he should. Hopefully this helps him be more comfortable wanting the ball though.

11:10 is the right basketball play, dropping back when the guard penetrates from the top of the key. If he doesn't do that there is nobody back on a missed shot. Though I wasn't sure whether you were talking about his movement on the initial penetration or when Silas takes it back out. If it's the latter, I think the whole set was off once Silas backed out of the paint.

“hope is not a strategy.” Ross will compete with Landrew for the starting SF, May the best man win. Stew can compete with Pierce or some other transfer. My point was Hurley should be recruiting a starting caliber PF and selling him on that opportunity. I don’t think he’s penciling stew in as the starter and targeting backup caliber PFs like he did with Malachi as a backup PG.

My observations are relative to the standard of a top 5 team vying for a championship, not beating Butler which has no chance under the sun of vying for anything but second place in the BE. Lots of turnovers and still a lot of blow by penetration . They couldn’t finish at the rim and rebounding took away a lot of extra chances for them to score.

It's just a really strange takeaway to call the defense of our guards suspect when Hurley said after the game Silas changed our entire defense and mentality from last year.

Our guards held their guards/top three scorers to 19 points on 6-31 shooting. Those three were averaging a combined 45 points per game on 50% shooting before last night.

Defense is actually what we did really, really well last night - we are 4th in Ken Pom, moved up from 7. It's our strength to date. Not sure what this cat was watching.

We still allow a lot of dribble penetration, but it doesn't seem to impact teams' ability to score against us.

It's intentional, Dan Hurley does not want to give up 3's so the players are taught to play aggressive on the perimeter which leads to more penetration into the paint
