I think most every big east game is going to be a battle like that.

But was most disappointed to see us build up a big lead in the 2nd half only to give it away. They made 10 more FT's than we did and committed 7 less fouls according to the officials. A W is better than a L, but it certainly wasn't a thing of beauty...

The analytics people will hate our shot chart in this one. So many contested mid range 2s. We let Butler dictate our offense, except for the start of the game … and at the end, when we ran our stuff for AK (although we had the tough contested mid range 2 from Diarra go in as well).

A little bit of life from Mahaney was good to see. We keep burying him, but our ceiling involves him getting us some offense somehow, so that we can have another tool in our toolbox when Ball and/or Diarra aren’t scoring. We said that after Texas (as did Hurley) and he regressed, but maybe he can build on this one.

A win is better than a loss but would be nice to not have a close game every single time. This is the kind of thing that leads to early round exits.
But it’s early and team still finding its way.
No, this is what being a fan of a college basketball team is like. We've been spoiled by the last 2 years, but that's the outlier, not these close games

JS no points, S J starting. It's so hard to figure the lineup and contributors game to game. Really relied on the starters this game.

Core 3 needs to be on the floor as much as possible, can’t have more than 1 off the floor at once. Our early momentum went into toilet once we went to bench. We have 6 reliable players at the moment.

2G is going to be a gap all year, Solo useless if not hitting 3s. Perhaps with Amad back we see some 2PG lineups. Just can’t have that level of softness at this spot.

We got bullied in the paint today after Samsons first 3 minutes. Outrebounded and out blocked, allowing a 16 minutes per game guy hurt us. Reed showing his reputational inconsistencies. He was not a Kodiak today, more Winnie.

Refs didn’t help - 20 fouls to 13, with a few of those Butler fouls coming late when they had to. So is the road.

Three ball won it for us today. Work in progress continues, enjoying the ride. A win is a win and we’ll be seeing many more of these close ones this season. Looking forward to seeing how Dan uses Amad after the break as it feels like we’ll need him to make a serious run in March. Our bench is truly meh.

Maybe @temery tried to merge threads on his old iPhone.

My comment in the deleted post game thread mentioned figuring out substitution rotations to sustain leads and momentum.

And AK got back some of his big game swagger. McNeeley and Diarra were solid all game too.

Yeah, that was not what you'd call an all-around team effort. Mediocre to bad games from everyone not named Alex, Liam, Hassan or Tarris.

What a roller coaster. But at the end of the day, we took the lead 12 seconds into the game and never trailed. Another close win!

The good -
  • We forced a timeout after 80 seconds and were up double digits after 4 minutes. Great start
  • 8 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds at halftime for Liam. Finished 17/7/5
  • I love the possessions where Solo and Diarra came off screens, crossed over to the other side, and hit a short midrange shot. Our offense stagnates when we refuse to take shots that aren’t layups and threes, but those jumpers are always going to be there
  • Karaban cold blooded with 2 clutch threes! Choosing to ignore the late miss and the near turnover
  • Mahaney buckets!!
The bad -
  • Samson foul trouble after 3 minutes and 7-0 fouls after 10 minutes. Doubled up on FTs again (excluding the 4 intentional foul FTs at the end)
  • 16 point lead cut to 3. 14 point lead cut to 5. 10 point lead tied up. It’s a game of runs but was not great seeing us almost blow 3 separate double digit leads
  • wtf Andre Screen
But at the end of the day, the Huskies keep rolling. Let’s go!

Closer than it should have been but some clutch shots down the stretch. Karaban with the 2 threes. Diarra's floater high off the glass. And McNeeley goes to the line and hits both like a veteran.

Glad to get the win. Would have been a miserable 11 day break if they had lost. Get some rest and DePaul next on New Year's Day.

Good to see Mullins and his family there. When they showed the bench I'm thinking to myself, "That kid behind the bench looks familiar." Then it dawns on me that Mullins lives near there and I'm thinking to myself, "You putz, that's Braylon Mullins."
