Despite the lopsided lost and mistakes that cost 3 TD’s, Chief saw some building blocks for the future from our “Pivot Recruits” true Freshmen on both offense and special teams.
Additionally, it’s amazing what some imaginative play calling can do in terms of setting players up for success. Of course, they still need to catch the ball.
We potentially have playmakers on offense and special teams. Our defense though is beyond disappointing - while Randy was collecting checks and preaching getting bigger and stronger, we forgot to teach tackling. Ironically, Mitchell leads the country in tackling, we are told. However, how much of that is due to others missing tackles first? But, good for him.
Chief also senses a cultural shock around the returning players that the freshmen avoid. As Randy collected paychecks for another two years the players were told how much progress they were making under his capable guidance. They appear stunned when confronted with reality this season and a competitive measuring stick beyond the BS they have been fed. You can’t help but feel bad for their circumstance, despite our disappointment as fans.
