Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner says it would mean a lot to her to have her jersey retired at Baylor despite not attending a game at the school since her falling out with former Bears women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey more than eight years ago. "I've seen that special moment with a lot of my teammates and friends at their schools where they gave their all," Griner said Thursday of the thought of getting her jersey retired.

Griner deserves to have her jersey retired after her remarkable career at Baylor. I'm honestly quite surprised it hasn't happened yet. Whoever has the power to make that happen (Kim or others in administration) dropped the ball big time by not doing so already.

Schools vary WILDLY on the timing of retiring a player's jersey. Apparently some wait for their professional career to be over. Others (I'm looking at you Iowa) wait about 5 minutes after a player uses up their eligibility to send that jersey up to the rafters.

Just read on a Baylor board that the stipulation was a player had to have her college degree to get their jersey retired which makes sense as to why Griner hasn't had hers and would now be eligible. I wonder if the same precedent is there for the men's side.

At any rate, Sims finished playing in 2014 and had her retired in 2016, Nina Davis finished in 2017 and had hers retired in 2020. Guessing Griner's will be done this year or next.

Coach Mulkey, will she do the honors?

Of course Griner will have her jersey retired. Now that she's apparently finished school it will happen when the department wishes.

Schools do not have the same mindset or timelines about jersey retirement. I actually like what UConn does by putting a player on the wall rather than retire the number.
