Bridgeport is not a bad city. It does take time to be able to be able to "read" the history of the city.
It seems as if PT Barnum pretty much made the city. Only one of his old mansions still exists. It's down Main Street from Harbor Yard. Very close. It's a museum now. You can walk from this bar to the arena and pass by PT Barnum's mansion. Otherwise, downtown Bridgeport is weak. It's mainly a residential city. Stamford and Norwalk have more going on.
Black Rock section of Bridgeport towards the Fairfield line has a lot of really cool bars, a few offering live music. I second Ralph & Rich's to eat at after the game!
There's a garage next to the Arena, and an open parking lot at the arena.
By the way Bridgeport is not a bad, dangerous place. Its just 'ugly' and old. For those concerned about safety, its 1 o'clock in the afternoon for crying out loud.
If you can't handle Bridgeport in the daytime then I don't know what to tell you.
