The Sun beat Tulsa on Wednesday evening despite trailing until the middle of the third quarter.
For us here, the big news is that Kelly Faris played 27 minutes (compared to 8 for Alyssa Thomas, 13 for Chelsea Gray, 14 for Shekinna Stricklen, and 16 for Kayla Pederson). She scored just 5 points (1 for 1 on 3's), but she had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and only 1 turnover. She played the entire 4th quarter and about half of the third quarter.
As usual with Kelly, her impact on the game is not really apparent in these statistics. She guarded Karima Christmas, Riquna Williams, and sometimes Odyssey Sims, and was only really beaten once on a drive to the basket. She stopped many more drives than that. Teammates looked for her on outlet passes and seemed to know exactly where to find her.
Contrary to those who say that Anne Donovan doesn't appreciate her, it was rather apparent (as it has been in recent games) that Donovan has growing and now major confidence in Kelly's floor game and especially in her defense on quick guards and small forwards. A few times I saw her gather the team in a huddle prior to a free throw and lead the conversation in that huddle.
I am starting to believe that her roster slot is reasonably secure.
