Massengale and Burdick had pretty impressive numbers in the game against Middle Tenn tonight. Massengale 14 pts on 6 for 9 shooting with 5 assists, 2 steals, 0 TO. Burdick had 14 points on 5 of 6 shooting and 10 boards.
Going by the play by play on ESPN it looks like Simmons sat for the first 10 minutes. (She also had another abysmal game.) I wonder if Simmons reduced role helped Massengale.
I expected the Vols to be much better this year than they have been. I had them at #3, just behind UConn and Baylor. They haven't performed anywhere near that level, partly because the freshmen so far haven't lived up to their hype. But with Simmons out of the starting lineup, I wonder if Massengale, Burdick and UT may be in the process of turning their seasons around. Middle Tenn isn't a great team (though better than Holy Cross, FDU, Buffalo and Pacific), so we'll have to wait and see. But the folks in Knoxville have reason to be encouraged.
