Breaking the bank

Just to be clear, you don't think he would have gotten those New Balance and Fanatics deals if he went to UConn for 1 year instead of Duke?
What sneakers was he wearing while playing for Duke?

I don't know what shoe company sponsors Duke or what the language of their contract is but I'm very confident that with our Nike deal are hoops players (men & women) have to wear Nike shoes during games.

I also would wager that Nike would not be happy with a star UConn player appearing in New Balance commercials.

Same at Duke. So what would have been different at UConn?

Cooper Flagg, while playing at Duke, was required to wear Nike sneakers due to the school's contract with the brand. However, he had a separate NIL deal with New Balance. During the Final Four, Flagg was seen wearing the Nike Kobe 6 Protro in the "All-Star 2.0" colorway. After Duke's season ended, Flagg officially began wearing New Balance basketball shoes at the NBA Draft Combine.

Fair enough.

Wrong
Why go to Duke then? K's gone. UConn is coming off back to back titles. The kid went to Duke because that's where the sneaker money wanted him to go. At least that's my theory.

He has a New Balance deal. Duke is a Nike school. He would have eyes on him wherever he suited up. He's a generational talent for God's sake.

Whether you like it or not, the kids really get sold on the Duke "brotherhood," facilities, culture, etc.

Duke also provided more NIL from collectives that UConn could. No one should be turning up their nose at an extra few million.

I don't think this matters as much as people think. New Balance is playing the long game and Flagg is one of its top assets. It'd much rather he sign with the biggest brand in the sport - even if it's a Nike school - and reap the windfall of the extra exposure than a lower profile program that's linked to New Balance.

It's also worth noting that he signed the deal with New Balance well after he committed to Duke. He was worth more there regardless of which company he ultimately signed with.

From Q3 to Q4 of 2024, New Balance experienced a significant +18.3% lift in brand equity among Gen Z adults

Most of this appears to be “real” NIL money, not the fan bribery collective kind.
It also seems to me that it's money Flagg might've gotten attending another blue blood like Kansas or Kentucky as they're longer term contracts based with sports brands that are not necessarily the product of attending Duke.
Yes, of course. He was well known long before college, he's a handsome kid, and so these are real NIL deals.

I hope this puts to rest the whole "Duke bought him with NIL" from ignorant UConn fans. It made no difference to him where he went. Duke offered slightly more exposure, but collective/School NIL wasn't going to matter to him. Just as it wouldn't have for Paige when she came to UConn.

BC just became the first D1 New Balance school

Crazy. I don't mind athletes getting paid, but to be honest IMO it ruins the game a bit.

The Cinderella's story in college basketball is officially dead

It made no difference to him where he went.
But did he know that? He was a 17-year-old kid from rural Maine being courted by some of the wealthiest companies in the world. He was always going to do what they "advised" him to do - it's not an accident that he ended up with the biggest brand in the men's game despite having no real ties there just like it's not an accident that Paige ended up with the biggest brand on the women's side.

Yes, he knew that. Those brands contacted him in HS. He was a really big deal. He had over 800k Instagram followers. He has, I think, as high a grade as anybody has had in a generation, even out of HS.

He wasn't some toothless backwoods hick a year ago making these deals. He was at the biggest high school basketball factory in the world with an entire staff and educated family working with him to navigate the process. He's traveled the world playing ball and was on the court in workouts with NBA All-Stars twice a month.

Do you think his family didn't have legal representation walking them through the process?

He knew he was a great prospect, obviously. But it's human nature to want to minimize risk when you're sitting on a winning lottery ticket. He could have gotten hurt. He could have struggled, even if only a little bit, with the adjustment to college ball.

New Balance wasn't going to tell him no if he'd opted to attend UConn, or Louisville, or Florida. But the deals he ended up signing would have been, at minimum, slightly less.

In other words, there's a reason these prospects that can go anywhere rarely end up going anywhere original. The brand networking complex never rests no matter how much brand power you may feel you offer independently.

With Cooper, it's Occam's Razor. No school was going to materially impact his NIL or draft position. He grew up a Duke fan, that's where he always wanted to go. UConn, maybe helped by Clingan's mom playing with Cooper's mom, plus being back to back champions, was enough for him to even consider a school other than Duke. He didn't even visit Kansas remember. In the end, he went where he always wanted to go, but it wasn't about money.

That's funny because my wife just bought a pair of Sambas recently and I asked her if she was going to be playing indoor soccer. Good to know she's up on the current fashion trends. Better she buy those than another Louis Vuitton bag she doesn't need!

I am about ready to quit following sports. I love my Huskies and always will but this money is ridiculous.
I have no problem whatsoever with "real" NIL like what Flagg got. If a national brand, or even a local brand, wants to pay a college athlete for advertising rights that they expect to make money on, more power to everyone. My problem is with the collectives, and boosters and donors pooling money to pay kids. That to me is what is crazy. Not New Balance actually trying to make money off of the young man's reputation.

You think a wife looking at two items is an "either/or?" That's so cute.

Agree completely. I love Storrs Central and subscribe... but it's an incredibly shady way of paying kids. At least 20 years ago I could pretend like UConn was better than that.

Won’t be allowed in the future if this new revenue sharing model goes through.
