Purdue from a coaching/skillset would be more of a concern.
Yup. Funny (?) how some here think Hurley is the only good college coach. Probably some of the same people ready to ditch him less than 18 months ago. We will see next year what happens when most if not all of the stars who brought us to the Promised Land the last 2 years are gone even some who would still be here, not to mention how we handle the chance that we might be weaker on both sides of the ball around the hoop and generally less experienced in the backcourt It will be a different challenge for Hurley.

Our defense might've had something to do with that. I think Painter expected us to double Edey. When that didn't happen they struggled to get open looks.
Yes, I suspect the post you quoted was trolling. Purdue's offense was predicated on Edey and his presence leading to a lot of open 3s on the perimeter. They shoot 3s often and accurately.

Our game plan was to mostly allow Edey to operate 1 on 1, but cut off everyone else. And it worked brilliantly.

If he didn't anticipate us having DC guard him one-on-one, that's terrible coaching. Most people here assumed we wouldn't double Edey.

You'd think he would have tried as hard as he could to make sure a team shooting 40% from 3 got off more than 7 shots.

Even if he assumed we would double, then realized we wouldn't, then come up with an adjustment. I don't know what that is as our perimeter defenders were more athletic and simply better than their perimeter guys. But even if Edey scored 50 in that game they would have still lost. I didn't see one iota of a change in philosophy. It's baffling.

Great point. We are not the only great program out there. To think otherwise would be foolish. But objectively speaking, there is a marked difference between the offense that we run, and the offense that everybody else runs.
For the moment, yes. At one point Bill Walsh was the only one running his offense too. I already saw more teams doing some of what we do last year. Next year it will be even more. Kansas runs complex offense if less off ball screening. A lot of it is that you can't run it without the right players, so you'll see more as more teams adapt.

Hurley has already been in this position. The "stars" you mention that are leaving weren't stars when they got here Hurley and the staff developed them into stars. He's been in this position before and succeeded and I have no doubt he'll do it again.

I don't disagree, but getting those shots may have been more difficult than he anticipated. I think it was not unreasonable for him to assume that Donovan would get into foul trouble, given the fact that that's been an issue on and off this year for him, and the fact That Purdue has been getting favorable calls on Edey all year long. With Donovan out, I can see how he wouldn't be particularly concerned about Johnson defending Edey. Interestingly, Edey also lacked the ability to guard Johnson.

As it turned out, though that premise wasn't entirely wrong. Both are centers were in foul trouble and we ended up with Karaban defending a 7'4" monster. The difference was we were able to contain him enough, discounting the 10 points he got after the game was decided, to keep Purdue from being a factor. Playing one in one in without double teams to exploit, Purdue just couldn't get good open looks.

How? They shot open threes all season long. They don't have guys who can create their own shot from the perimeter. We had a major advantage at every position besides starting center.

I guarantee you that there are numerous coaches out there who either (a) could have anticipated what was going to happen (at least as a possibility) and figured out ways to create some decent looks from 3 or (b) made that adjustment in game if they somehow overlooked it as a possibility.

There are absolutely ways to get guys looks. Where were the screens? Edey could have done more to find guys, rather than repeatedly go for 2. (They kept going for 2 when it was clear they couldn't afford to keep doing it.)

I can tell you one coach who absolutely would have gotten them more looks from 3: Jay Wright. And I know that for a fact because he talked about it halftime and mentioned pindown screens as one way Purdue could gin up some more 3s. Didn't happen. No adjustments from Painter.

It can be true that (a) UConn was an awesome defensive team and also true that (b) Painter's game plan sucked. Because both are. Look, UConn was great defensively but I am certain that if the teams had played again the next day, Purdue wouldn't have shot 7 3s. Big L on Painter's part.

We destroyed everyone the past two tournaments. It had to do with our players and our coaches, not their players and their coaches. We had the best low post defender in the country and the best perimeter defender in the country and by far the best team in the country. Only way anyone had a chance against us is if we beat ourselves and we don't beat ourselves.

Painter is an extremely good coach. He's been KenPom top 30 in 15 of the last 18 years. Top 10 six times, four without Edey.

Purdue is in Indiana. The kid is from Indiana an hour and a half from Purdue's campus. He could choose Hurley and UConn, for sure, for all the obvious reasons. But it's not like Painter hasn't had success with guards. Braden Smith, Jaden Ivey, Carsen Edwards, E'Twaun Moore, etc.
I think they did adjust, but we were too good, it didn't really matter

Absolutely this. In 5 years, everyone woll be running some version of our Euro-ish motion offense.

Maybe we would have again limited them to 7 threes. They obviously weren’t comfortable with our cover

What were they suppose to do? It’s extremely difficult to win a game when you simply cannot get layups at the rim. Clingan was a cheat code for us.
They were shocked when we decided to basically never double Edey. Purdue had no other plan to get their shooters open looks. Clingan being an eraser definitely helped, but both teams had the "not anything we haven't seen before in the B1G" attitudes going into the games.

They stuck to their plans and did absolutely nothing else. I'm not mad about it though. It was funny as hell.

Painter and his staff got out-coached by Danny and his staff. We still had the better team but the coaching staff/scout was noticeably better for UConn.

Illinois can be criticized as at some point long before the run hit the 30's someone should have realized it may be time to try a new approach.

I'm not sure Purdue could have done a whole lot different, it isn't as if they could have added athletic guards & wings to their roster at halftime.

Where are you getting this from? You really think Painter thought UConn would double team Edey with Clingan in the game? Everyone knows we had a 7'2 monster who was going to play Edey straight up.

Purdue was pretty used to getting open looks because of Edey all year. The rest of the guys on their team just weren’t that good without the looks he got them.

Our guys were just way more talented, especially defensively. Clingan was able to help us play normal defense and that was pretty much the difference. Nothing crazy lol

What would you have suggested Illinois do? 3s weren’t falling and Clingan demoralized any easy shot they can get.

We won because their only hope of offense was the hardest shot in basketball. Only Alabama was equipped to play that game. Illinois had the right gameplan which was to attack Clingan and hope he got in foul trouble so they can run normal offense. It just didn’t work lol
