So UConn has been in the third bracket from the beginning and USC in the second. Why is that, I wonder. I mean, so many people like to say last year’s champs “deserve” to be #1 initially. By that same reasoning, the final 4 teams “deserve” to be above the elite eight teams. Accordingly, USC should be a 2 seed until they actually beat someone.

I am as a rule adamantly apathetic about preseason and early season "bracketology", but in the latest bracket posted by ESPN, UConn is in the #2 bracket, USC in #3.

Yeah, so there's always confusion as to the numbering of regions, especially now that there are only two. I swear the numbering has changed, so my chart may not be correct. Just updated, so hopefully nothing gets mixed up.

. I don't think so.

SCar is projected as being the Number one overall Seed in the Birmingham region. UConn is projected as the second #1 seed in the Birmingham region. I think that makes them the number three one seed threfore the number 3 bracket. I think

but, who cares what is projected as "bracketology" in November? This is stupid. Not you. Bracketology.

I think more easily in terms of the old S curve, and I'd assumed Birmingham 3 was equivalent to the third position on the S curve.

Yes, the numbering can shift with each iteration because there is no predetermined link between overall seeding and regional site location. For example, if USC or UCLA were to rise to overall #1 seed, we would then see a "REGION 1 SPOKANE" designation on the ESPN toy bracket.

This is not accurate. There is no single "Birmingham region". There are two separate regionals that happen to play at the same site. The numbers 1-4 for each regional designate the overall seeding of the respective top seeds for each regional. On the current toy bracket, "SPOKANE 3" means that the projected top seed in that regional is the projected overall #3 seed. The top seed in "SPOKANE 4" is the projected overall #4 seed. But again, those numbers can shift as the projected overall seeding shifts.
