>>When quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck were squaring off in a highly-anticipated showdown on Sunday night Weist called Boyle and suggested that he not only watch the game but also see how the two quarterbacks are able to step up in the pocket and make throws down the field.

"You sit there and watch the game the other night with Peyton Manning, you watch Luck and Manning and you watch them step up into the pocket and they are throwing the ball as they are getting hit," Weist said. "I talked to him about it and you see them handling pressure because everybody has pressure, you look at the sacks that are happening in any league. You see pressure, how does he handle it? How does he secure the football? How fast does he make decisions? How fast does that ball come off his hands in those situations? That is where he has to learn from that last game that he had pressure and he has to learn to make that decision and let that ball go before the pressure closes in on his and how to move around in the pocket with that pressure. The pocket is always changing and any good defensive coach is going to do a good job of learning what our pocket is and how to put different pressure angles on it so that is what he has to do."<<

Interesting and true, but, it assumes there's a pocket and that it holds for a reasonable time and/or that there are open receivers to throw to as the QB is getting hit and/or plays are designed to be not that dependent on the pocket holding more than 1 or 2 counts. If Manning and Luck had to work with our pass protection, our minimal running game, and were college frosh to boot, it isn't so clear how well their names would be known.

Manning never had a really good Oline, he just made them seem really good. When he would get the ball out to his receivers faster than any other QB in the NFL, there was never time to develop a pass rush for opposing defenses. It doesn't matter who you have in your front 7 if you only have 2-3 seconds to get to him before the ball is out to a receiver. And because he got the ball outr so quick, they could always split the TE out and use an empty backfield which puts a ton of pressure on your secondary. In the prime of the Patriots/Colts rivalry the Pats would never blitz Manning because they knew he was impossible to get to and that he would pick them apart if they brought more defenders on the blitz. Instead they dropped as many defenders into zone coverage and jammed receivers to get the timing off.

If Boyle (or any QB for that matter) develops to the point where he can be extrmely fast in his reads and release of the ball like Weist mentions, then the pocket breakdown will be much less of an issue.

Manning always had All Pro caliber talent at WR (Harrison, Wayne, Welker, etc) though which is a different story. You do need people who can catch after the ball is out.....
