OT: Box Score - NCSU vs High Point (Qadence Samuels)

If Q can continue to play with confidence, I like the look of this team with Trygger Pierre Q Brooks and Jones. Wes complained about team defense, and that’s Q’s path going forward. Shine on defense and make yourself indispensable!

I like that she played 29 minutes and had 0 fouls. I believe that she was trying too hard and ended up making silly fouls while she was at UConn. I hope she has a great time at NC State and that she enjoys her stay there.

Glad to see that Q is getting big minutes at NC State......Let's see if her fine play continues during the regular season.....she clearly has skills but I'm not sure that Wes will be happy if she shows the same level of inconsistency we saw while she was at UConn.....

I believe that most of that inconsistency was due to trying too hard during the few minutes that she got. There were many players over the past two years that got very little playing time due to the number of great players ahead of her and others. She is now in a different system that is most likely more to her liking.

Could be........time will tell.......

Very glad Q went to an elite program and is showing out. I always felt like she was just a hair away from breaking out at UConn, but at this time, with so much elite talent ahead of her on the depth chart, it's great she gets to showcase her stuff at a really good program! And yeah, I miss her puff-balls!

Wow, she was a beast.
Win or lose, I'd like to see her do nearly as well against Maryland, their next opponent.
That game could really put her on the map.
Good luck Q! (The only UConn player to wear a blue eyebrow)

I'm sure Geno gave Wes Moore his insights on Q (or Wes asked for feedback), probably something along the lines that she's a great kid who just needed a new environment to show out what was always capable of doing. It seems this is now happening for her (yay!) and NC State is the beneficiary.

Good showing for my Panthers
Yeah, but it's a rare night when Brooks and Jones combine for 5 of 22 shots: they should have taken more advantage of that. High Point is a good team, if they had played well they might have won.

I'd say Q has earned a starting spot at this point. Anything can change, but right now it's looking like a pretty tight 6/7 player rotation with Zoe, Zam, Q, Pierre and Tilda as the starters and Quigley and either Maddie Cox and/or Lorena Awou off the bench. Maybe one of the freshmen can carve out a small role off the bench as a back up guard, we'll see.

Q's biggest ...well only competition, is Devyn Quigley. Quigley is a Sophomore, she played sparingly last year and showed a knack for scoring and shooting the ball and being in the right place and the right time. If Quigley was another 2 inches taller she'd be a fantastic option as a Madison Hayes replacement - where Samuels seems to have a leg up on Quigley is with her length and bounce. What State needs from the 3 is shooting, defense and rebounding. With Zoe and Zam the 3 is not going to be asked to handle the ball or play make for anyone. The offense will run through the 2 guards and Pierre. Tilda and whoever is at the 3 will be complimentary pieces. They need to keep the defense honest, space the floor, knock down open shots and score efficiently within the offense. They also need to be counted on for defense. Zoe and Zam haven't shown themselves to be lock down defenders and with their importance on offense, ideally Samuels would be able to lock up lead guards or wings on other teams.

In a limited sample Samuels is shooting the ball well and rebounding very well. That rebounding factor is a separating factor right now between her and Quigley. I can also totally see them 2 playing together as Quigley can play the 2 and let Samuels stay at the 3 OR Samuels can shift down and go small and play the stretch 4 if she's going to rebound at this level. Yesterday when Pierre fouled out that is exactly what Wes did and Quigley responded well. She ripped down 10 of her 11 rebounds in the second half.

She's definitely in line for big minutes this year in Raleigh. I hope the concerns you guys have about consistency prove to be a thing of the past!

Curious where NC St. has her playing. Always seemed that Geno could not figure out where she could add the most value - 1 or 2 guard, small forward, etc. Never had any offensive sets run for her so typically her shot was as time was running out. So much talent was ahead of Q that without being negative, this decision was likely not a high priority.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I’d like to give another shoutout to Q from the game against Tennessee. She played major minutes, was often isolated on Cooper and held her own on defense despite being physically overmatched. And she came up with a strong defensive rebound in the closing minutes that may have decided the game. Her scoring wasn’t in evidence so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she will recover her perimeter shot. Coach Moore seems to rely on her, perhaps a sign of the overall weakness of his roster. But if she starts scoring like we know she can and continues playing defense like this, she’ll deserve all the minutes she gets.

Q shot it well against High Point but then followed it up with a 1-4 vs Md and 1-8 against Tennessee. I will say, she made a pretty key 3 late in the 2nd half for State to help gain some control of the game.

Her calling card so far has been doing some of the things that don't always show up in the box. She was a double digit rebounder vs Maryland and then as you pointed out, she guarded Tennessee's best player all game yesterday. While Cooper still had a fantastic game, Samuels was the best match up on her. She provides some length and athleticism State's team needs on the wing.

Her direct competition for minutes, Devyn Quigley, also had a poor night shooting. Her calling card is her shooting efficiency and last night she was 0-2 in 11 minutes.

The key for Q will be to buy in on being the 3 and D person on this team. Rebound, defend and be a capable 3 point shooter as a floor spacer. That's the role this roster needs filled by someone. She seems to have the tools to do it.

She needs to continue to work on her shooting. She finds ways to break free and get open shots, but her shooting needs improvement.
I will say that her defense is much better than it was last year, and she looks like a better rebounder.

Q is an easy kid to root for. I wish it had worked out at UConn. It makes me wonder if she had - would she be part of the core 10? Ahead of Allie? Ice? And yet she goes to a legit top 10 team and is a starter? Says a lot about the quality of depth at UConn this year.
