Are scholarships by year or by term as far as the NCAA is concerned? Could a player start second semester his freshman year, play the following three years, then sit the fall semester of his fifth year, and play spring semester?

Eligibility is determined by season. If he plays this semester, he would lose a year of eligibility (barring an injury? idk how that would work). Whereas say a distance runner could compete for cross country, then redshirt indoor and outdoor track as a freshman, then redshirt xc sometime during their career, and finish as a 5th year in indoor and outdoor.
