Borges practice box score

Pretty much tracks what most of us have assumed re: starting lineups/rotations/strengths and weaknesses right?

Really the only starting spot up in the air is the 3, and whomever loses out on that one is first man off the bench. One of Stewart/Ross hopefully breaks through and either starts or gets major minutes. Furphy potentially in play for rotation but likely not major minutes this year. Reed needs to stay healthy out of foul trouble as much as humanly possible for this team to reach ceiling.

Most indications point to Mullins at the 3

Demary, Ball, Mullins, AK, Reed are going to start. Malachi, Stewart, Reibe are going to play a lot.

I love this! Going up against DC is pretty rough. Wonder how Tarris did?
Donovan is 280+ lbs. It’ll be great for Tarris pushing Donovan and being pushed by Donovan while being coached on the proper leg and knee position against a guy that size.

Really don’t like that AK was far and away the leading scorer…we saw what happened last year when he had to be the focal point of the offense. Hoping he’ll be 4th or 5th in scoring behind Ball, Reed, and Mullins and/or Silas

Alex def looking more yoked in the arms and shoulders

My wife was there, her (high level) thoughts:
  • Was impressed most by Mullins, Furphy, and Stewie.
  • Karaban was Karaban, with more muscle.
  • Liked what she saw from Koroma
  • Demary is going to be solid
  • Still wasn't impressed with Jayden, thought baby brother was better. He just can't seem to get out of his own head.
  • The new players were gassed, need conditioning.

I don't think it's appropriate to make these comments after 1 summer practice scrimmage. Let's wait until at least December before you can make a comment like that.

Had the chance to attend today as well. Couple quick hitters:

  • Reibe did some no contact pick n pop drills prior to the scrimmage, shot looks smooth. A lot of potential for 5 out with him in.
  • Mullins shooting is as good as advertised. Him and Solo were going back and forth, both elite.
  • Gonna be hard to keep Furphy off the court. Not the quickest but could see him initiating offense as he played really well in the pick n roll and his passes were on time and on point.
  • You could tell Silas was really catering to running the team and facilitating. Towards the end of the scrimmage he was more aggressive and got to the rim for good layups pretty easily.
  • Alec is no slouch, he filled in for the backup PG role sans Malachi and was confident in running the offense and quick enough to break down the D at times. Never hurts to have insurance in that area as we found out last year.
  • Hurley said they may add an additional C from international ranks for upcoming season.
  • Alex played free and benefitted from great looks closer to what he was getting in 2023 season but more volume. Also hit some nice 3s off the dribble.
  • Tarris had a huge size advantage over Koroma and exploited that well. Curious how the battles with Reibe will go.
  • Jaylin was aggressive and didnt settle for as many 3s, but struggled finishing at the rim. Overall liked his mindset and shot selection even though shots werent going in.
  • Spoke with Dan, re-confirmed blue connecticut throwbacks happening. Grey jerseys no longer a thing apparently.
  • Dan mentioned he wanted to do Mich state exhibition game because he didnt like the way last year’s schedule/team transitioned to the step up in high major games (aka maui)

He also took almost 2x as many shots as the next guy…

Again, in a summer practice scrimmage. And if I take as much out of that as you are, I think I'm happy with him scoring 26 ppg on efficient shooting. You wouldn't be?

Let's see what happens in November and December. Plus, I think he learned a lot last year.

Any thoughts on Ross? Previous poster said he still looks stuck in his head. May be realizing he came back to struggle to get any minutes and pressing but who knows.

Couldn’t agree more you can only take so much off a July scrimmage.

Good to see some size and quickness on the perimeter on both ends. That ultimately killed last years team.

Tarris hit a three as the shot clock ran out-- Hurley was not happy
Three 3's for Mullins based on the math. Would also suggest Tarris nailed a three. Ross had 2. Millender's number make no sense, so something is screwy here.

Top 4 scorers are who'd you hope for, exception being Demary. We need him to be great. Who was guarding Tarris?

I hate to say it but I kind of agree. His shot selection was good but he didnt convert much on the looks. Did play better in fast break situations. Its very early and we dont know how new guys will perform under the bright lights but Ross will have to outcompete Mullins, and Furphy for min and thats a tough order.

Hurley said he's a starter and then walked it back a bit saying he'll have to earn it. We had hoped as much, but it's good to hear where he is. Love seeing Alex with 26 points. It makes me feel like he came in focused and on a mission.

Love to hear that Mullin can score off the dribble and I know I saw the sneaky hops. He is going to be a star…also I see Furphy finding minutes because he may be the best passer on the team. I have not seem all of our players in extended action but from what I saw from Furphy in the FIBA games is that he has great court vision uses angles to find passing lanes and when we need to get a easy basket from Tarris he is a good bet to make the entry pass.

And defend. Obviously early but sounds like based on upside his role to lose.
