I have heard from people at UCONN, students, administrators and coaches of other sports I know well, Omar is a really great young man with his head screwed on right. I sincerely hope he overcomes whatever is preventing him from playing at 100% and next year he thrives. Good Luck OC

Rooting for Omar as well.
Glad to hear he's got his head and heart in the right place.
Hope he can break thru and give us something in these last few games...

Glad to hear him say that the hips aren't bothering him. Lots of self-proclaimed geniuses/doctors on this board claim that's why he's been struggling. He denied it straight up. Sounds like his ankle injury has been bothering him most.

He acknowledged that it was tough not to work on his game in the off-season. Sometimes that's enough to throw someone off... especially someone like Omar who's primarily a rhythm jump shooter. His shot wasn't falling and he started to over-think every part of his game when the shooting didn't come naturally.

I am definitely keeping my eyes on Omar down this stretch run. The past 2 games have been steps in the right direction for him. Other contributors on the team are have been inconsistent of late (DD, LK especially). We're still looking for a 3rd contributor (after Bazz/Boat) who can put points up nightly. DD is too inconsistent, he needs to stay another year. There's definitely an opportunity present for Omar to turn it around if he starts playing well. Sometimes, all it takes for a shooter to get going is seeing the ball go in a few times. If this happens, his confidence could skyrocket.

Not having an off-season to prepare yourself and then not being healthy (ankle/concussion) during the year can definitely be tough and frustrating. But Omar is from Brooklyn, so we know he's tough too. Others seem to have written this year off for him, not me. He saw some decent minutes against SMU with Lasan struggling and NG in foul trouble. If he's getting minutes then that means Ollie sees that he's been playing well in practice... also echoed by Bazz. The opportunity is there, he just needs to take it. I still think he is going to be able to contribute to this team THIS YEAR, probably when we need it most down the stretch in an important game. When he goes off, I'll be the first person to say I told you so to those who wrote him off.

Can't think of a better leader and supporting voice I'd rather have in Omar's ear than Shabazz.

I would love to see that piece get back into the puzzle. The game is between his ears now. Great to hear Shabazz telling him to focus on defense and let the offense come to him once the rythm of the game sets in.

SEASON-LONG slump. Not 5 games. Not 10 games. But SEASON-LONG. Wow!

I guess Omar qualifies as an example of the Sophmore Slump definition.

If he can just play solid defense/rebound like Bazz said that may help start to break out of it.....

Part of Omar's problem is that he lets the rebounds come to him. Maybe Bazz can tell him how to attack the glass.

Bazz hit it on the head. He needs to sort himself out on the defensive end. Against SMU, he came in, got backscreened and gave up an alley-oop. He can still be a valuable contributer while working himself back, but he has to get his head straight on defense.

If you can cut and paste the quote where he denies the hip problem "straight up" I'd appreciate it. I must be overlooking it in the article.

Its all from the video. Omar says that the hips are not bothering him at all. But mentions that inactivity during the summer may be a reason.

Omar broke out LAST year, Im not waiting for any sort of breakout. this is a case of a guy losing minutes and finding it hard to gain ground. All his mistakes are extrapolated because we all think he is hindered by his hips. wouldn't be surprised if he has a good game soon

Thanks. Forgot about the video. The last four or so games his defensive play has significantly improved. If he can string together some shots he can be an option if LK or NG are having a bad game.

Having a third outside option could be key. That should be NG, though at times this season he has seemed tentative. I like the aggressiveness NG has shown taking it to the hole lately. It'll keep the defenses a little honest, give him a little more shooting space if they respect the drive and should serve as a model for what Calhoun should be doing when he's back and firing on all cylinders.

Think about the spark that Omar turning his season around would bring to the team. He definitely has the ability, he just has to find his confidence and his shot again. He finished the season last year scoring double digits in 10 out of the last 14 games of the season. I really hope he gets out of this slump, and if he's going to do it, now would be the perfect time. To give this team a little boost before tournament time.

To be fair, the hips might not hurt at all, but they could be limiting his mobility in ways that aren't readily noticeable to Omar. I don't think its a stretch to think this might be part of the problem. Not saying it is, but you can't automatically discount it. Flexibility and strength in the hips is a big part of athletic performance in most sports.

Not having an offseason is killer though.

I said this in my practice thread last week, but it bears repeating: Omar walked up into the stands after practice and started shaking peoples' hands, thanking everyone for coming. He could've easily stayed on the court and let the line of kids that wanted autographs come to him, but he went out of his way to shake hands and thank us. I'll be rooting extra hard for Omar moving forward.
