Ageless Sue Bird still soaring past expectations
“When she left, you take somebody with the No. 1 pick in the draft, you’re expecting them to be a franchise player,” Auriemma said. “I expected her to have a great career, but nobody can predict that you’re going to become the best point guard in the history of the league or maybe in the history of the world in women’s basketball. You always hope that they turn out to be great, but I think she’s probably exceeded everybody’s expectations when it comes to that.”
“She really just spent the first three years at Connecticut kind of blending in and trying to be a great teammate and be good, not necessarily trying to be great,” Auriemma recalled. “And then something happened, I don’t know.”
