It's tough beyond the top five or six without having seen any teams yet, with all the transfers, vaunted freshmen, and movement of teams. But:

1 South Carolina
2 UConn
3 Texas
4 LSU
5 Notre Dame
6 Southern Cal
7 UCLA
8 Iowa State
9 NC State
10 K State
11 Baylor
12 Duke
13 UNC
14 Oklahoma
15 Ole Miss
16 Louisville

Yes, it’s tough without seeing anybody play a real opponent yet, but that’s what preseason polls are. My estimate is that all (or a large majority) of us will agree that about 8-10 teams belong in the top 16. After that, we’re gonna see another 10 teams getting a handful of votes.

so, here we are after a week of play. Any thoughts. Were we too harsh on the new coaches at Stanford and Iowa. Too early too tell? SCar not looking invincible?

UNC? Creighton? Duke? Baylor?

West Virginia 15TH in the first AP poll following games played

I feel like, with the games that have been played so far, there is a very clear top 8 with national championship potential...and then it gets a little hazy after those 8 teams.

Top 8 (in no particular order)
  • South Carolina
  • UConn
  • Texas
  • Notre Dame
  • USC
  • UCLA
  • LSU
  • Oklahoma

I do not think I've drastically changed my view of anybody.

Initial thoughts:

It looks like So Cal is a defense first squad that is going to grind out wins with JuJu and Iriafen carrying the load.

UCLA seems to be struggling with turnovers maybe and maybe isn't as good on boards overall as it should be?

LSU seems to be shaping up about the same.

I am not sure how you can assume that So Cal is a defense first squad after 2 games. Ole Miss has always been offensively challenged against better teams during Coach Yo's time and that game was marred by the SoCal 26 turnovers. I need to see more games to agree.

UCLA is missing Kiki Rice so that may be a temporary ball handling issue.

Either way, historically, both Close and Gottlieb have been more program sellers rather than x's and o's coaches.

ND is the team to watch as despite the Watson and Westbeld injuries, adding King and Karlen plus freshman Koval has that team looking great. Texas also added 6'6" Oldacre to their roster who was at Miami last year so they also look strong.

And Karlen hasn't played yet, due to a sprained ankle.

Oldacre had some good numbers the last game. I've got check out her next game to see if Vic is playing Big post-whisperer again. ;)

Okay Folks, let’s see your Top Sixteen teams. If you want to list more than 16 you can, but I’m only gonna tally up the top16 for each entry.

Poll closes at NOON on Sunday, November 3

As for as my selections, I have always followed the rule “ the champ is the champ until somebody beats the champ” even though nobody has repeated in nearly a decade. ( I predict an early loss Gamecock loss in LA without an established post in the road against Betts.)

1. Go Cocks
2. Paige’s Crew
3. U$C Troggans
4. Domers
5. Vic’s Bunch
6. Kim’s Bayou Bengals
7 UCLA
8 Iowa State
9. The Wolfies
10. tOSU
11. K-State
12. Oklahoma
13. Duke
14. Baylor
15. Iowa
16. Louisville

( I think Tennesse finally found a coach). Might take another year to crack the top 25 when they bring in a PG)
They brought two PG’s in. Both are excellent. Tenn will be a top 20 team. Iowa will not be.

So Cal didn't shoot it any better in Game 2 really. It's definitely something that might change as they get more experienced, but seems like a baseline.

Texas looks like Vic's team. Big squad, defense, and shooting TBD.

Notre Dame is interesting and can win the title but can't move them up too high until their interior proves more reliable on boards.

Did you see the game yesterday against Purdue? Liatu King, transfer from PITT grabbed 15 rebounds and with Koval and Karlen that is still a pretty good front court, add in Miles, Citron and some kid named Hidalgo and man....

I don't understand your retort on SoCal. Just because their shooting is poor (usually from the outside) did you make the correlation that their defense has all of a sudden become elite? So Cal gave up 74 shot attempts by Ole Miss which is not a sign of good defense and Cal Poly is not a good team (49 shots) so beating a cupcake shows us nothing.

So far, our top 9 chosen in preseason looks pretty accurate. Huge differences in SOS should even out some in the conferences
